The parish includes the villages of Bothel and Threapland. The village of Bothel is south-east of the parish of Aspatria and Threapland is south of Aspatria and Carlisle is eighteen miles (29 km) North-east of the parish. It had a population of 483 in the 2011 census figures.

It is about 5 miles (8 km) from Caldbeck, 2 miles (3 km) from Ireby with which it now forms the civil parish of Ireby and Uldale together with Aughertree. The Uldale Fells are in the vicinity, and to the southeast are Chapelhouse Reservoir and Over Water. It is located just inside the Lake District National Park. In 1931 the parish had a population of 217.

Caer Mote is a hill of 289 metres (948 ft) in the north of the English Lake District near Bothel, Cumbria. Its summit lies just outside the boundary of the Lake District National Park and offers a view of Bassenthwaite Lake. Under the name Caermote Hill it is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. Wainwright's route is an ascent from Bothel to the northern summit St. John's Hill at 285 metres (935 ft), continuing south to the main summit and south east to meet a minor road beside the Roman fort and follow that road north for an anticlockwise circuit. In his original book Wainwright lists the height as 920 feet, but in the 2011 2nd edition Chris Jesty corrects this to 948 feet.

All the listed buildings are designated at Grade II, the lowest of the three grades, which is applied to "buildings of national importance and special interest". The parish contains the villages of Bothel and Threapland, and is otherwise rural. Apart from a milestone, all the listed buildings are houses, farmhouses, or farm buildings.

Plumbland is a civil parish in the Cumberland unitary authority area of Cumbria, England. It contains eleven listed buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England. Of these, one is listed at Grade II*, the middle of the three grades, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. The parish contains the village of Plumbland and the settlements of Threapland, Parsonby and Arkleby, and is otherwise rural. The listed buildings include houses and associated structures, a church, a dovecote, a bridge, a farmhouse, and a school later used as a village hall.
