The county was formed in 1890 from Logan County; it was named for American Civil War General James B. McPherson.

Antarctica sits on every line of longitude because the South Pole is on the continent. Theoretically, Antarctica would be located in all time zones; however, areas south of the Antarctic Circle experience extreme day-night cycles near the times of the June and December solstices, making it difficult to determine which time zone would be appropriate. Almost all of Nevada is in the Pacific Time Zone. The few exceptions that exist all observe Mountain Time and are close to the borders of Idaho or Utah. Other than these minor exceptions, Nevada is the only non coastal state to be entirely on Pacific Time. Most of Idaho uses Mountain Time, and Arizona is officially on Mountain Time except for the 2/3 of the year when Daylight Saving Time is in effect, which they don't observe.

Time in Kansas is divided into two time zones. The Central Time Zone contains 101 of the state's 105 counties. Four counties fall into the Mountain Time Zone instead. These four counties are Sherman, Wallace, Greeley, and Hamilton, all of which border Colorado.
South Dakota lies in both the Mountain Time Zone and the Central Time Zone. Mountain Time roughly contains the western half of the state, but not all of it. Rapid City is the largest city in the Mountain Time portion of the state. Central Time contains the eastern half of the state and roughly more of the state than the Mountain Time Zone and includes the state capital Pierre and the largest city, Sioux Falls.
Most of Texas is in the Central Time Zone with the exception being the two westernmost counties.
