Tonsley is a southern suburb of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.
The suburb of Tonsley was created on 27 January 2017 by dividing the suburb of Clovelly Park in half. The southern part of the suburb was separated from Clovelly Park and named Tonsley at that time. [3] [4]
Named after England's Tonsley Hall, [5] it includes the former vehicle assembly plant, which was often called Tonsley Park. The Chrysler Australia car plant was opened in 1964. The factory was taken over by Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) in 1980 and closed in 2008. [6]
The former vehicle factory is being developed as the Tonsley Innovation District with light industry, campuses of TAFE and Flinders University as well as residential development. [5]
The suburb is served by Tonsley railway station on the Flinders railway line.
Flinders University is a public research university based in Adelaide, South Australia, with a footprint extending across 11 locations in South Australia and the Northern Territory. Founded in 1966, it was named in honour of British navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the Australian and South Australian coastline in the early 19th century.
Tonsley railway station is located on the Flinders line in the south-western Adelaide suburb of Tonsley, 12.2 kilometres from Adelaide station. The original station was 13 kilometres from Adelaide, and was the terminus of the line from its opening in 1966 until the station's closure in 2019; the station was then relocated to its current position and opened in 2020.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) is a fully owned subsidiary of parent company Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Japan. The company was established in 1980 and began vehicle manufacturing in that year, having taken over the facilities of Chrysler Australia. Australian production ceased in 2008 and since that time the company has been exclusively a vehicle importer.
Mitchell Park is a suburb south of Adelaide. It shares common boundaries with Marion, Bedford Park, Clovelly Park, and Ascot Park. In recent years it has undergone major redevelopments through a program of urban renewal which included the renovation of many properties owned by the former South Australian Housing Trust. The Flinders railway line is a suburban commuter line in Adelaide, South Australia, that branches off the Seaford line at Mitchell Park, and ends opposite Science Park, close to the Flinders University and the Flinders Medical Centre. The line is single track for most of its length, from Celtic Avenue, near Mitchell Park station, to its terminus.
