Officially the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape, but usually referred to as the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre and abbreviated to TRCC, is the only rape crisis centre in Toronto, Ontario. [1]
It runs a 24/7 crisis line and provides free counselling, [2] [3] and is one of 42 rape crisis centers in the province of Ontario. [4]
In the mid 1990s, the TRCC highlighted the issue of gender based violence at Pride Toronto. [5]
In 2018, the TRCC saw an increase in demand for services following reporting on the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases. [6]
In 2019, the TRCC received $1m from the Ontario Government, 25% of what had been promised to them. [4] The wait time for services reached 15 months in 2019. [7]
Patrick Walter Brown is a Canadian politician who has served as the 51st and current mayor of Brampton since 2018. Entering politics when he won a seat on the Barrie City Council in 2000, Brown later joined the Conservative Party and became a member of Parliament (MP) in 2006. He represented Barrie in the House of Commons until 2015, when he was elected as leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Party and resigned his seat in Parliament. Brown was subsequently elected to represent Simcoe North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and became the leader of the Opposition. He served as leader until 2018, when he was expelled from the caucus. He later returned to municipal politics and was elected mayor of Brampton. In 2022, Brown contested for the federal Conservative leadership election, but was disqualified following claims his campaign violated the Canada Elections Act. He was subsequently re-elected as mayor of Brampton.
The Meeting House is an Anabaptist church located in the Greater Toronto Area suburb of Oakville, Ontario. It consists of nineteen regional sites meeting mostly in cinemas, each of which has a lead pastor with a team of elders and part-time staff, with and interim senior pastor, Karmyn Bokma, and a board of overseers. With a consistent average weekly attendance of around 5,000, it is ranked by the Hartford Institute of Religion as the third largest church in Canada. The Meeting House is part of a denomination called Be in Christ.
Edward Sapiano was a Canadian defence lawyer, based in Toronto, Ontario, notable for his role in many high-profile criminal cases. He initiated Canada's largest criminal investigation of police, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of several Toronto police officers and was also involved in the so-called Toronto 18 terrorism trial. Edward Sapiano is also noted for demanding immediate DNA testing of his client shortly following the 1996 arrest of the suspected "North York serial rapist", leading to his client Jeremy Foster's full vindication, despite a false confession to the crime. In his quest to get illegal guns off the street, Sapiano also created the only lawyer-operated gun amnesty program available in North America, Piece Options. He is also known for starting a database of rulings and judgements to track alleged misconduct among Toronto-area officers which was then retrievable for cross-examinations in other cases by other lawyers. Edward Sapiano, after putting his practice on hold for two and a half years due to kidney failure, returned to court in 2017 for the Andrea White murder trial. Edward died on March 21, 2020 from complications of kidney disease and was cited to be the first lawyer in Canada to practise while undergoing 10 hours of daily dialysis. He was regularly featured by media outlets, including The Globe and Mail, CBC, and the New York Times commenting on criminal law issues.

Potter was a triple amputee and was blind in one eye as a result of complications due to a fall at work.

The Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) is a not for profit organization that supports people with disabilities and addictions. In 1993, CILT advocated to the Government of Ontario for financial support. The aim was to provide support to people with disabilities to pay for their own home care. By 2012, their advocacy succeeded and they were given responsibility for administering such a system. In the early 21st century CILT advocated against ableism and for better support for people with disabilities and improved access to COVID-19 vaccines.
