USS Pequot (ID-2998) was a German cargo steamship that the US Government seized in 1917 after the US entry into the First World War. She briefly served in the Naval Overseas Transportation Service. In 1923 her original owner, DDG Hansa, chartered her and then bought her back.

The ship was launched in 1910 as Ockenfels, and was the second of three DDG Hansa ships to bear that name. She was one of a series of eight sister ships built for DDG Hansa. The others were Birkenfels and Freienfels launched in 1910, Kandelfels, Sturmfels and Huberfels launched in 1912 and Lauterfels and Spitzfels launched in 1913.

She is the second ship to serve as USS Pequot. The first USS Pequot was a gunboat in the American Civil War.

In 1921 DDG Hansa took delivery of a new Ockenfels. Therefore when the company bought back Pequot in 1923 it gave her the new name Argenfels.

Building

Joh. C. Tecklenborg built Ockenfels in Geestemünde, which is now part of Bremerhaven. [1] She was launched on 9 April 1920 and completed on 28 May. She had a four-cylinder quadruple-expansion engine that was rated at 517 NHP [1] and gave her a speed of 11 kn (20 km/h). For handling cargo she had one 25-ton derrick, eight five-ton derricks and three three-ton derricks. [2]

On 1 August 1914 after the First World War began Ockenfels was interned in Boston. On 6 April 1917 after the USA entered the First World War the US Government seized her in New York City. However, her German crew sabotaged her main engine and repairs were not completed until late in 1918. [2]

The US Shipping Board bareboat chartered the ship to the US Navy. She was defensively armed with one 5 in (130 mm) gun and one 3 in (76 mm) gun. On 28 October 1918 the ship was commissioned as USS Pequot under the command of Lt Cdr John Decry, USNR. A fortnight later the Armistice of 11 November 1918 ended the war.

Pequot served in the Naval Overseas Transportation Service carrying general cargo for both the US Army and the US Shipping Board. On 11 July 1919 she was struck from the Navy List and returned to the Shipping Board.

In 1923 the California Steamship Company bought Pequot, registered her in Panama and almost immediately chartered her to DDG Hansa. On 28 June 1923 she was in Cardiff, Wales when DDG Hansa bought her back. [2]

By then DDG Hansa had a new Ockenfels so it renamed her Argenfels. She spent a decade in DDG Hansa service and was sold for scrap in 1932. [1]

USS Covington (ID-1409) was a German transatlantic ocean liner that was launched in 1908 for the Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) as Cincinnati. In 1917 the United States seized her, had her converted into a troop ship and renamed her Covington. In 1918 SM U-86 torpedoed her, killing six of her complement. Three tugs towed her about 1/3 the way to Brest, but she sank the afternoon of 2 July 1918.

USS <i>General W. C. Gorgas</i>

USS General W. C. Gorgas (ID-1365) was a United States Navy troop transport in commission in 1919, named for William C. Gorgas. It was a German ship seized by the US Shipping Board after the US entered World War I. Under charter from 1917 from the Panama Railroad Company, it had carried troops and supplies to Europe. After being used as a troop transport to return troops from Europe in 1919, later that year it was converted back to commercial use as a passenger and freight ship operated by the Panama Railroad Company.

SS Empire Chamois was a 5,864 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1918 by Ames Shipbuilding and Drydock Co, Seattle. She was ordered by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique but was requisitioned by the United States Navy and commissioned as USS West Mount with the pennant number ID-3202 in 1918. She was decommissioned in May 1919 and passed to the United States Shipping Board (USSB) as SS Westmount. In 1927 she was sold to the Dimon Steamship Corporation and renamed SS Pacific Redwood. She returned to the USSB in 1932 and passed to the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937. In 1940, she was passed to the Ministry of Shipping, passing to the Ministry of War Transport in 1941 and being renamed SS Empire Chamois. She was sold to Astral Shipping Co Ltd in 1946 and renamed SS Granview. Admiral Ushakov was a 7,838 GRT cargo liner that was built in 1939 as Neidenfels by Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau AG, Bremen, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft "Hansa", Bremen. She was seized in May 1945 by the British at Eckernförde, Germany, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Dee. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Union and renamed Admiral Ushakov. She served until 1975, when she was scrapped at Split, Yugoslavia.

Lowland was a 1,923 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1944 as Kattenturm by Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, Germany for Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa, Bremen. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Eden. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Lowland. A sale to a Bermudan owner in 1959 saw her renamed Mary Enid. She was sold to a Greek owner in 1963 and renamed Stelianos and then Marynik following another sale in 1964. In 1967, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Euphipides, serving until she was scrapped in 1969.

DDG Hansa

DDG Hansa, short for Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa was a major German shipping company specialising in heavy freight and scheduled traffic between Europe and the Far East. Founded in Bremen in 1881, the company declared bankruptcy in 1980.

SS <i>Wairuna</i>

SS Wairuna, originally called D/S Schneefels, then SS Gibraltar and SS Polescar, was a cargo steamship that was launched in Germany in 1913. She had a varied career spanning three decades under successive German, British and New Zealand owners before being scuttled in the North Atlantic in 1945.

SS <i>Bärenfels</i> (1921)

SS Bärenfels was a German steam cargo liner that was launched in 1921 for DDG Hansa. In 1940 she took part in the German invasion of Norway and was sunk by Fleet Air Arm dive bombers. Her wreck was raised, and in 1941 she was returned to service. In 1944 a Royal Navy midget submarine sank her, killing 11 of her complement. In 1947 her wreck was raised to be scrapped, but while under tow she sank a third time.
