"U & Me" is a song by Italian Eurodance group Cappella, released on 6 June 1994 via Axis Records and Red Bullet labels as the sixth single from their second studio album, U Got 2 Know (1994). [2] Co-written and produced by Gianfranco Bortolotti, it features vocals by Vikki Sheperd, sampled from her song "Love Has Changed My Mind".[ citation needed ] The single experienced success in many European countries, particularly in Finland, where it peaked at number one for two weeks. It was also a top-10 hit in Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK. Its music video, directed by Juan Kerr, was filmed in London and A-listed on music television channels, such as VIVA.

Critical reception

In his weekly UK chart commentary, James Masterton wrote, "The new hit is more of the same, Italian dance which will probably find as much favour and annoy as many people as the last one." [3] Pan-European magazine Music & Media noted that "a synth buzzes like a swarm of bees approaching with queen bee singer Kelly ahead of it. The sting of this Euro dance song is of course the catchy melody line and the simple yell." [4] Alan Jones from Music Week gave it four out of five, saying, "Less distinctive than recent Cappella outings, this actually resembles Maxx's "Get-A-Way", with similar synth scoring and a passable rap. But since that record is top five and Cappella have had three consecutive Top 10 hits, it is not hard to see where this is going." [5] James Hamilton from the Record Mirror Dance Update declared it as a "'you and me forever' girls prodded surging cheesy Italo hip house galloper". [6]

Chart performance

"U & Me" peaked at number one in Finland for two weeks and topped the Music & Media European Dance Radio Chart for five weeks. [7] The single ended up with a position as number five on the EDR year-end chart. [8] It entered the top 10 in Italy (6), the Netherlands (3), and the UK, as well as on the Eurochart Hot 100, where it entered on 25 June 1994 and peaked at number seven on 9 July. In the UK, "U & Me" reached number 10 during its third week on the UK Singles Chart, on 26 June, [9] and it also reached number 10 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. Additionally, it was a top-20 hit in Austria (15), Belgian Flanders (14), Denmark (15), Germany (14), Sweden (15), and Switzerland (13). Outside Europe, it charted in Australia, where it peaked at number 76.

Airplay

The song entered the European airplay chart Border Breakers at number 16 on 18 June due to crossover airplay in West Central-, Northwest-, North- and Northeast-Europe, and peaked at the fifth position on 16 July. [10]

Music video

The accompanying music video for "U & Me" was directed by Juan Kerr [11] and filmed in Castle Films Studios in London. [12] It was A-listed on Germany's VIVA in July 1994. [13]

Cappella is an Italian Eurodance music group formed in 1987 by producer Gianfranco Bortolotti. The act went through a number of line-up changes over the years but was most successful in the early 1990s when it was fronted by British performers Kelly Overett and Rodney Bishop. Their biggest hit was "U Got 2 Let the Music", which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1993.

The single's music video was directed by Nick Burgess-Jones and filmed in London, depicting the band performing in a jungle setting.

A sizeable hit in several countries, particularly in the United Kingdom and Finland, it entered the top 10, reaching number nine and four, respectively. The single entered the Eurochart Hot 100 at number 87 on 11 December 1993 and peaked at number 10 on 19 February 1994. However, it did not reach the same level of success as "What Is Love" and "Life". By March 1994, worldwide sales had reached 300,000 units.

As for other Culture Beat's singles, a CD maxi entirely composed of remixes was added among the available media a short time after. The ballad is written by Nosie Katzmann with Jay Supreme, Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweie. It was a top-10 hit in Finland and the Netherlands. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number 20. Its music video was directed by Matt Broadley and filmed in Sweden.

Written and produced by Robyx, it features vocals by Italian singer Alexia. It became the most successful single of the album, reaching number-one in Italy and number two in both Belgium and Spain. The single was also released with new remixes for the Christmas holidays. Giacomo de Simone directed its accompanying music video, which was filmed in Italy with Alexia.

On the UK Dance Singles Chart, it peaked at number one. It contains an uncredited interpolation of "Happy House" (1980) by British rock band Siouxsie & The Banshees and an uncredited vocal sample of "You Used to Hold Me" (1987) by Ralphi Rosario & Xaviera Gold. Vocalist Anna Ross and rapper MC Fixx It were chosen by producer Bortolotti for live performances. Cappella was later sued by Siouxsie & The Banshees for failure to pay publishing royalties and lost. In 2002, new remixes were released as "U Got 2 Know 2002".
