The Uganda Junior Staff College, is a staff college in Uganda. Typically, graduates are commanders in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Other African countries also send their cadets to the college for training. Past graduates of the college have come from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and other African nations. [2]
The junior staff college is located in Qaddafi Barracks, in the city of Jinja, approximately 87 kilometres (54 mi), by road, east of Kampala, Uganda's capital city. [3] The coordinates of the college are 0°27'00.0"N 33°12'18.0"E (Latitude:0.4500; Longitude:33.2050). [4]
The creation of the Uganda Junior Staff College was first announced by Chief of Defense Forces Aronda Nyakairima in February 2006. [5] In May 2006, the college graduated its initial class of 39 military officers. The college was officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the commander in chief of the UPDF. [6]
The college aims to train middle military commanders in various areas of expertise to acquire the skills needed to lead others in battle and in peacekeeping missions. Subjects include international humanitarian law, the French language, basic military intelligence, and the pre-senior command and staff course, for those destined for higher command responsibilities. The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), previously known as the National Resistance Army, is the armed forces of Uganda. From 2007 to 2011, the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated the UPDF had a total strength of 40,000–45,000 and consisted of land forces and an air wing.
Salim Saleh is a retired Ugandan military officer who has served in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), the armed forces of Uganda. He is a brother to the current President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and an adviser to the President on military matters. He served as Minister of State for microfinance from 2006 to 2008. Edward Katumba Wamala, more commonly known as Katumba Wamala, is a Ugandan general who serves as Minister of Works and Transport in the Ugandan cabinet, since 14 December 2019.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a Ugandan military officer. He is a Lieutenant General in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) and was the commander of the Special Forces Group, which contains the unit known as Presidential Guard Brigade responsible for providing security to the President of Uganda and to Uganda's constitutional monarchs, from 2008 to 2017. The Special Forces Group is also responsible for providing security at Uganda's oil installations. He is the son of President Yoweri Museveni, Commander in Chief of the UPDF and president of Uganda. Muhoozi has served as Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations since 2017.
The University of Military Science and Technology (UMST), also Lugazi National Defence University (LNDU), whose official name is Uganda Military Engineering College, is a tertiary institution of higher learning, that instructs qualified military officers and technicians in various fields of engineering and science. The university is administered by the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF), under the auspices of the Uganda Ministry of Defence.
Major General Nathan Mugisha is a military officer in Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). He is the current Deputy Ambassador of Uganda to Somalia. He was appointed to that position in June 2011. Prior to that, he served as the Commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), June 2009 until June 2011, being the third military officer to serve in that capacity. Before taking the command of AMISOM he was commandant of the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College, at Kimaka, a suburb of Jinja.
General David Rubakuba Muhoozi is a Ugandan Military Officer and Lawyer. In UPDF, he is popularly known as Mzee's 'Ironfist in a velvet glove'. He currently serves as the Chief of Defense Forces of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), the highest rank in the Ugandan military. He was appointed to that position on 9 January 2017, replacing General Edward Katumba Wamala, who was appointed State minister for works.
Lieutenant General Wilson Mbasu Mbadi is a senior military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Deputy Chief of the Defense Forces and Inspector General of the UPDF. He was appointed to that position in January 2017, replacing Lieutenant General Charles Angina, who became Deputy Commander of Operation Wealth Creation. Immediately prior to his current position, from May 2013 until January 2017, he served as the Joint Chief of Staff of the UPDF, where he was replaced by Major General Joseph Musanyufu.
Major General Elly Kayanja, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective September 2014, he is the Head of Operation Wealth Creation Programme, whose objective is to improve the standard of living of rural citizens, through farming. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director of National Intelligence, under General David Sejusa. Prior to that, he served as the Director General of the Internal Security Organisation.
Benon Biraaro was a Ugandan military officer and a high-ranking commander in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). While still in the active military, he served as the commandant of the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, Jinja. In 2016, he ran (unsuccessfully) for President of Uganda on behalf of his agrarian Farmers Party of Uganda.
Brigadier Kayanja Muhanga, is an army officer. He currently serves as the Commander of the UPDF Contingent in Somalia . He was appointed to that position in January 2014 by General Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Brigadier Muhanga served as the Commandant of the Military Police within the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).
Brigadier Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), who serves as Uganda's military attache at the Ugandan embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, based in Kinshasa, since October 2017.
Peter Elwelu is a Lieutenant General in the Ugandan military, known formally as the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Since 9 January 2017, he has served as the commander of land forces, which is the fourth-highest position in the UPDF hierarchy. Prior to that, from June 2013 until January 2017, he was the commander of the UPDF 2nd division, based in Mbarara, the largest town in Uganda's Western Region.
Major General Steven Sabiiti Muzeyi, is a Ugandan military officer and police officer, who serves as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) of the Uganda Police Force, the second-highest rank in that branch of Uganda's government, effective 4 March 2018. He replaced Martin Okoth Ochola, who was promoted to Inspector General of Police. Immediately prior to his present assignment, Sabiiti, at the rank of Brigadier, served as the Commander of the Military Police of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF).
Joseph Musanyufu, is a lieutenant general in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), who serves as the Joint Chief of Staff (JCOS) of the UPDF, the third-highest rank in the Ugandan military. Immediately prior to his present position, Musanyufu served as the Chief of Personnel and Administration in the UPDF, a position that he was appointed to in 2014.
Major General Don William Nabasa, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). He currently serves as the Commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC), an elite unit that is responsible for the security of the President of Uganda, and that of traditional cultural leaders and vital national installations, as well as the country's oil fields. He assumed command of the SFC, in January 2017, taking over from Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was appointed Senior Presidential Adviser on military affairs.
Paul Lokech, is a senior military officer, at the rank of Major General, in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). As of December 2019, he is on special assignment "to monitor on behalf of the guarantors of the South Sudan peace process, the assembling, screening, demobilization and integration of the armed forces of South Sudan". He was appointed to that task in November 2019.
