United Nations Security Council resolution 1219, adopted unanimously on 31 December 1998, after reaffirming Resolution 696 (1991) and all subsequent resolutions on Angola, particularly resolutions 1202 (1998) and 1213 (1998), the Council condemned the absence of actions to determine the fate of crew and passengers aboard United Nations Flight 806 which crashed on 26 December 1998. The Security Council expressed extreme concern at the crash of United Nations Flight 806 and at the disappearance of other aircraft over Angolan territory controlled by UNITA. It deplored the lack of co-operation in clarifying the circumstances of the incident and permitting a United Nations search and rescue mission. The Council demanded that Jonas Savimbi, the leader of UNITA, respond immediately to appeals from the United Nations to search and rescue possible survivors of Flight 806. The flight had 14 people on board and crashed 16 miles from Huambo. [2]
The resolution continued by expressing further concern about the increasing number of vanishing aircraft over UNITA territory and condemned the lack of co-operation to determine the fate of crews and passengers involved in these incidents. UNITA in particular had to facilitate investigations into the disappearances; if there was no compliance with the current resolution by 11 January 1999, further action would be taken.
Finally, all countries were reminded to comply in the implementation of sanctions against UNITA imposed in resolutions 864 (1993), 1127 (1997) and 1173 (1998).
An aviation accident is defined by the Convention on International Civil Aviation Annex 13 as an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft, which takes place from the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until all such persons have disembarked, and in which (a) a person is fatally or seriously injured, (b) the aircraft sustains significant damage or structural failure, or (c) the aircraft goes missing or becomes completely inaccessible. Annex 13 defines an aviation incident as an occurrence, other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft that affects or could affect the safety of operation.

Kam Air Flight 904 was a scheduled passenger domestic flight from Herat Airfield in Herat to Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan's capital Kabul. On 3 February 2005 the aircraft crashed in mountainous terrain killing all 97 passengers and 8 crew on board.
United Nations Security Council resolution 1173, adopted unanimously on 12 June 1998, after reaffirming Resolution 696 (1991) and all subsequent resolutions on Angola, particularly Resolution 1127 (1997), the council announced its intention to impose further sanctions against UNITA for non-compliance, unless it co-operated to extend state administration throughout the country.

Korean Air Flight 801 was a scheduled international passenger flight operated by Korean Air. The flight crashed on August 6, 1997, on approach to Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, in the United States territory of Guam, killing 229 of the 254 people aboard. The aircraft crashed on Bijia Peak, south of Nimitz Hill, in Asan-Maina, Guam, while on approach to the airport. The National Transportation Safety Board cites poor communication between the flight crew as probable cause for the air crash, along with the captain's poor decision-making on the non-precision approach. It remains the deadliest aviation disaster in the United States and its territories to have survivors.
Myanma Airways Flight 635 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight from Yangon to Tachileik in eastern Myanmar that was operated by a Fokker F-27 Friendship owned by Myanmar's flag carrier Myanma Airways. On 24 August 1998, during its descent to Tachileik the flight went missing over a hill approximately two miles (3.2 km) from the airport. Search and rescue team later found the wreckage of the aircraft. The accident killed all 36 passengers and crew.
United Nations Security Council resolution 864, adopted unanimously on 15 September 1993, after reaffirming resolutions 696 (1991), 747 (1992), 785 (1992), 793 (1992), 804 (1993), 811 (1993), 823 (1993), 834 (1993) and 851 (1993), the Council noted the continuing situation in Angola and went on to condemn and place international sanctions on UNITA.

On 19 March 1998, a Boeing 727 passenger jet operated by Ariana Afghan Airlines crashed on approach into Kabul, Afghanistan, killing all 45 people aboard. The flight may have been involved in smuggling and Islamic militant operations, as Ariana was at that time controlled by the Taliban-led Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan regime.
United Nations Security Council resolution 1127, adopted unanimously on 28 August 1997, after reaffirming Resolution 696 (1991) and all subsequent resolutions on Angola, the council, acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, imposed sanctions on UNITA following the lack of compliance in implementing peace agreements after the civil war.

The 1985 Aeroflot Antonov An-12 shoot down occurred on November 25, 1985, in Angola during the Angolan Civil War. An Aeroflot Antonov An-12BP cargo aircraft operated by the Soviet Air Force flying from Cuito Cuanavale to Luanda was shot down, allegedly by South African Special Forces, and crashed approximately 43 kilometres (27 mi) east of Menongue in Angola's Cuando Cubango province.
