The Universal Aryan Brotherhood (UAB), also known as the Universal Family, are an active neo-Nazi white supremacist prison gang in the United States. Primarily based out of Oklahoma, the gang also has members in federal custody, as well as in several states across the country. [8]

The UAB modeled itself after the principles and ideologies of the original Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, but despite the similar name, the Universal Aryan Brotherhood has no connection to said gang. [9] It is also unrelated to the United Aryan Brotherhood (also based in Oklahoma). [10]

Background

The Universal Aryan Brotherhood are one of the many white supremacist prison gangs across the United States. Much like the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas and the Soldiers of Aryan Culture, the UAB operates both inside and outside of prison walls.

Members of the UAB identify themselves through distinctive criminal tattoos, as well as red and black clothing [7] The gang's particular insignia consists of a dual set of sig runes adopted from the infamous Schutzstaffel, which is also used by many other unrelated white power groups and neo-Nazi organizations. An additional expression used by the Universal Aryan Brotherhood is the numerical code "2112" (also written as "21-12"), referencing the 21st letter of the alphabet, 'u' for 'universal', in combination with the first and second letters of the alphabet (1, 2) which each correspond to 'a' and 'b' for 'Aryan' and 'Brotherhood'. Likewise, some UAB members sport tattoos of the letters "T.T.B.B.E", an acronym for the phrase "Till The Bitter Bloody End". Another acronymic slogan used by the gang is "U.F.F.U.", meaning "Universal Forever, Forever Universal". [7]

Two distinct subsets of the UAB exist: UAB 21 WoodGrain and the UAB Universal Family. [5] [ unreliable source ]

Organization and structure

Membership is exclusive to white prisoners. Members, who often refer to themselves as "Universal Soldiers", adhere to militaristic rules. [11]

Universal Aryan Brotherhood’s top echelon, known as the Main Council, directs gang activities and controls sub-councils in smaller prisons. [12] Most of the Main Council members are imprisoned inside the maximum-security Oklahoma State Penitentiary-McAlester. [13]

The UAB recruits by offering protection to white inmates in return for joining the gang. In order to be considered for UAB membership, a prisoner is required to be sponsored by a fully initiated member. Said sponsoring UAB member would then be responsible for conducting a background investigation of the prospect as a way of ensuring that he was not a sex offender, a law enforcement cooperator, or otherwise undesirable for gang membership. [7]

According to the United States Department of Justice, the gang uses cell phones that have been smuggled inside Oklahoma prisons to orchestrate criminal activities on the outside. [2] [14]

Criminal activities

The Universal Aryan Brotherhood has been involved in numerous violent crimes ranging from kidnapping to murder. Like many similar white supremacist gangs, its primary source of income is through the production and distribution of drugs – primarily, methamphetamine, but also oxycodone and marijuana. [15] Additional activities include carjackings, assaults, armed robberies and murders. [16]

Kidnappings

In an effort to expand UAB’s power and operations throughout Oklahoma, a series of multiple kidnappings were ordered and commenced. These kidnappings were also used as a way to further the gang's illegal activities and as a intimidation tactic against rivals. [15]

Murder of Sufeng He

In 2011, Chinese-American University of Tulsa student Sufeng He was shot and killed in an attempted carjacking by UAB member Billy Joe Hammons following a police pursuit from a subsequent crime spree that Hammons had engaged in. After Sufeng He was gunned down, Hammons exchanged gunfire with local police and was fatally shot. [17]

Torture and murder of Jared Langworthy

On December 7, 2019, UAB member Jared Langworthy was bashed with baseball bats, tortured, and thrown in a pond by a total of seven fellow gang members, allegedly over the destruction of an air conditioning unit that occurred during a fight with his girlfriend. Langworthy's gang tattoo was forcibly burned off his shoulder during the attack. Due to the severity of the beating, the inflicted injuries were fatal. [18] [19] [20]

The bank robberies were spearheaded by Donna Langan. The gang, who had links to Neo-Nazism and white supremacism, were alleged to have conspired with convicted terrorist Timothy McVeigh in the months before the Oklahoma City bombing terrorist attack. Although it has never been proven, many theorists believe the ARA funneled robbery money to help fund the bombing as a direct response to the Waco and Ruby Ridge sieges.

A prison gang is an inmate organization that operates within a prison system. It has a corporate entity and exists into perpetuity. Its membership is restrictive, mutually exclusive, and often requires a lifetime commitment. Prison officials and others in law enforcement use the euphemism "security threat group". The purpose of this name is to remove any recognition or publicity that the term "gang" would connote when referring to people who have an interest in undermining the system.

Peckerwood is a term for a woodpecker which is used in the Southern United States and it is also used as a racial epithet for white people, especially poor rural whites. Originally an ethnic slur, the term has been embraced by a subculture related to prison gangs and outlaw motorcycle clubs. The term was in use as an inversion of woodpecker by the 1830s, with the sense referring to white people documented from the 1850s. African-American folklore in the 1920s contrasted the white "peckerwood" bird with the African-American blackbird. The word became a common term in Jive.

Earl Leslie Krugel was the coordinator of the Jewish Defense League in the Western United States. In 2005, he was sentenced to prison on charges of terrorism after he confessed to plotting, with the group's leader Irv Rubin, to blow up the office of Arab-American congressman Darrell Issa and the King Fahd mosque in Culver City, California. He was kept in protective custody for three years for the 2001 bomb plot. Following his sentencing, he was transferred to a medium-security federal prison. Three days later, another prisoner killed Krugel by striking him in the head with a block of concrete.

A prison gang is an inmate organization that operates within a prison system, that has a corporate entity, exists into perpetuity, and whose membership is restrictive, mutually exclusive, and often requires a lifetime commitment. Political scientist David Skarbekargues the emergence of prison gangs are due to the dramatic increase in the prison population and inmate's demand for safety. Skarbek observes that in a small, homogeneous environment, people can use social norms to interpret what behavior is acceptable, but a large, heterogeneous setting undermines social norms and acceptable behavior is more difficult to determine. Prison gangs are geographically and racially divided, and about 70% of prison gang members are in California and Texas. Skarbek suggests prison gangs function similar to a community responsibility system. Interactions between strangers are facilitated because you do not have to know an individual's reputation, only a gang's reputation. Some prison gangs are transplanted from the street. In some circumstances, prison gangs "outgrow" the internal world of life inside the penitentiary, and go on to engage in criminal activities on the outside. Gang umbrella organizations like the Folk Nation and People Nation have originated in prisons.

The 211 Crew, also known as the Aryan Empire, Aryan Alliance or Brotherhood of Aryan Alliance is an American white supremacist prison gang, active both in and out of prison, that was formed in 1995 at Colorado's Denver County Jail. It was linked to several high-profile murders and criminal investigations. Those included the assassination of Colorado Department of Corrections head Tom Clements. Due to a threatening letter sent by a Texas Aryan Brotherhood member, it was suspected to be linked to similar assassinations of Texas district attorney Mike McLelland, and his assistant prosecutor Mark Hasse, but a former Justice of the Peace was eventually indicted for those murders.
