History

The college as it stands now was formed in 1970 as the College of Environmental Design. It was renamed the College of Architecture in 1984. Architecture was formally established at OU in 1926 as the School of Architecture under the College of Engineering. The Construction Science program began in 1978, and in 1982 the Interior Design and Landscape Architecture programs were incorporated into the college. In 1987, the Department of Regional and City Planning moved to the College of Architecture from the College of Arts and Sciences. [2]

In 1943, renowned architect Bruce Goff was appointed chairman of the School of Architecture and served in that role until 1955. [3]

In Norman, classes are held primarily in Gould Hall, built in 1950. In 2008, Gould Hall underwent a $33 million renovation and reopened in 2011, housing all divisions under one roof for the first time in the college's history.

A Bachelor of Environmental Design, (B.EnvD.), is an undergraduate course of study. Similar in nature to a pre-law degree, a B.EnvD is designed as preparatory undergraduate training for a professional course of study in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning, and is one of several degrees offered as preparatory training for the Master of Architecture degree. An alternative three-year Master of Architecture exists for people with a bachelor's degree not related to design, the M.Arch I degree. A Bachelor of Environmental Design should not be confused with a Bachelor in Environmental Studies, which though similar, does not train one for graduate professional study in architecture, landscape design, or urban planning. Environmental Design degree programs generally take four years of full-time study to complete, and many institutions allow a specialty emphasis within urban planning, architecture or landscape architecture. Other pre-professional degrees include the B.S. in Architectural Studies, B.A. in Architecture, the B.S. in Architecture, and the B.S. in Construction Management. Though the Bachelor of Environmental Design is not accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board NAAB, like other college degrees, programs in Environmental Design are accredited through their host-institution schools by various regional agencies, such as the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, or the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Bachelor of Environmental Design should not be confused with the M.Arch or the five-year accredited B.Arch degree.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">History of architectural engineering</span>

Architecture has been closely associated with engineering in the history of the building construction. The engineering for buildings was determined empirically in the early periods; later, scientific calculations for structures were developed in the 17th century, and engineering was taught as a separate course in the 18th century. Architectural engineering was established as a discipline in the formal realm of engineering in the late 19th century when the University of Illinois became the first of many universities to offer an architectural engineering program. The university with the longest ABET accreditation is Pennsylvania State University, which received theirs in 1935.
