Unnikannan is the first Keralite to successfully climb Mount Everest twice. He is a native of Azhuthan Poyil Veetil from Peringome, a village near to Payyannur in Kannur district of Kerala State, India [1] [2] [3] [4]

2012 Indian Army Women Everest Expedition

The 2012 Indian Army Women Everest Expedition led by Lt. Colonel Ajay Kothiyal recorded a total of 28 persons reach on the summit, 15 of them was Indians and 13 sherpas. Unnikannan was a member of this expedition but did not do the summit bid, [5] [6] [7]

2013 Indo Nepal Joint Army Everest Expedition(First accent)

The 2013 Indo Nepal Joint Army Everest Expedition led by Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal recorded a total of 43 persons reach on the summit, 11 of them was Indians and 32 sherpas. As a member of this expedition Unnikannan climbed Mount Everest first time on 20 May 2013 with co-summitters, [8] [9]

2015 Indian Army Everest-Lhoste Massif Expedition

He was a member of the 2015 Indian Army Everest-Lhoste massive Expedition. But this expedition abandoned at 6400 m due to earthquake and avalanches happened in that year in Nepal, [10] [11]

2016 Indian Army Everest Massif Expedition (Second accent )

Then in 2016 as team member of Joint Indo-Nepal Army Everest Expedition 2016 led by Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal he climbed Mount Everest with his team for the second time on 20 May 2016, three years to his first ascent and become the first Keralite to climb Mount Everest twice. Other climbed peaks

He joined the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling for the basic mountaineering course, as a part of the Indian Army's Adventure Wing in 2005. His mountaineering career started from the time the course was completed. The first peak was Mount Kalindi near Badrinath (6,102 m) in 2006. He climbed the peaks of Satopanth (7075 m), Chaukhamba I (7138 m), Trisul I (7,120 m), and Friendship Manali, Himachal Pradesh (5,289), Chaukhamba I second time. During the conquest of Friendship peak, the group gained the honor of being the first group to climb that mountain in the winter.

Personal life

He is a Naib Subedar in Indian Army. His primary education was at Peringome Higher Secondary School. Unnikannan is son K K.Padmanabhan, a farmer, and Shakunthala A. P. Veetil couple. TV. Prajisha is his wife and the couple have a daughter, Adhishree.[ citation needed ]

On 29 May 1965, 12 years to the day from the first ascent of Mount Everest, he made the summit with the fourth and final successful attempt of the 1965 Indian Everest Expedition along with H. C. S. Rawat and Phu Dorjee Sherpa. This was the first time three climbers stood on the summit together.

Harish Chandra Singh Rawat was a mountaineer who climbed the Mt. Everest in 1965. He was one of the 9 summiters of the first successful Indian Everest Expeditions that climbed Mount Everest in May 1965 led by Captain M S Kohli. He is the seventh Indian man and twenty second man in world that climbed Mount Everest. On May 24, 1965 Vohra and Ang Kami Sherpa together reached the top of Mount Everest On May 29, 12 years to the day from the first ascent of Mount Everest the fourth and last summit team with Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia and Phu Dorjee Sherpa, Rawat reached on the summit. This was the first time three climbers stood on the summit together.

Chhewang Nima was a well known Nepalese Sherpa who had climbed Mount Everest 19 times at the time of his loss on Baruntse. He was also called Chuwang Nima, and Chuwang Nima Sherpa. His loss in the avalanche and subsequent search made international news, and he was a well known mountaineer in the United States as well as Nepal. He worked as a professional mountaineer, but at the time of his loss he was helping another team fix lines after they had asked for help.

Ang Dorje (Chhuldim) Sherpa is a Nepali sherpa mountaineering guide, climber and porter from Pangboche, Nepal, who has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest 21 times. He was the climbing Sirdar for Rob Hall's Adventure Consultants expedition to Everest in spring 1996, when a freak storm led to the deaths of eight climbers from several expeditions, considered one of the worst disasters in the history of Everest mountaineering.

Asian Trekking is a commercial adventure company based out of Kathmandu, Nepal started by Sherpa Ang Tshering. In 2001, it was recorded that Asian Trekking ran 25 large mountain expeditions per year. Asian Trekking made international news in 2006 when four of its clients and two of its Sherpas died in a single season. One of their clients, David Sharp, died near the summit, and this event became the center of an international climbing ethics controversy. Founder of the company Ang said that climbers can die if they use all their energy getting to the summit of Mount Everest, only to be too fatigued for the descent.

The first attempts to summit Mount Everest by Indians were in 1960. The first Indians to reach the summit were a group led by Captain M.S. Kohli in 1965. 422 Indians made a total of 465 attempts between 1965 and 2018. These include 43 repeat attempts by 29 summiteers. There have been 81 attempts by 74 women and 7 repeat attempts by 4 female summiteers from India. Kasturi Savekar from Kolhapur, India climbed Mount Everest on 14 May 2022.

Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Chhering Norbu Bodh SC (retd.) is a retired personnel of the Indian Army, known for his mountaineering achievements while in the army. Bodh holds a number of Indian summiting records related to 8,000m peaks. Among others, he is the first Indian mountaineer to have climbed six of the fourteen 8000m peaks in the world, and the first Indian to stand atop Lhotse and Annapurna-1.
