Upendra Nath Verma,known with the honorific "Lokratna",is an Indian politician from Bihar. He was elected to the lower House of the Indian Parliament,the Lok Sabha from Chatra,Bihar,as a member of the Janata Dal. [2] He was the Union Minister for State,Rural Development in 1989-90 in the cabinet of Vishwanath Pratap Singh. Verma was a distinguished social reformer and author,who published numerous works on the social issues prevalent in Indian society. In his political career,he was associated with Samyukta Socialist Party besides Janata Dal and has served as Minister of Education and Revenue in Government of Bihar in 1967 and 1977 respectively. Verma served as member of legislative assembly in Bihar and was considered as an influential leader of Koeris in the Magadh region. [6] Prior to his entry into active politics,he was a teacher by profession. Verma was a social reformer and freedom fighter as well. He is known for active participation in Indian Independence movement. Having served as minister in both Government of Bihar and Government of India,he is known for his work in the education sector. As state minister for education in Government of Bihar,Verma led establishment of 22 High Schools and 2 colleges. He also served as minister for land reforms and revenue. His second son Bagi Kumar Verma is a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from Kurtha Assembly constituency. [7] His daughter in law,Kumud Verma has served as member of Bihar Legislative Council (Kumud is wife of his third son Abhijat Verma [8] ). [9] [10]
Verma was born on 23 August 1921,in Mukhdumpur bloc of Gaya district. The name of his village is Imanbigha. He was a socialist leader and considered as one of the pillars of socialism in the state of Bihar. He,along with Karpoori Thakur,Basawon Singh and others were instrumental in fighting against the feudalism in the state of Bihar. He won his first election from Konch Assembly constituency in 1967,and was appointed as state minister for education in first non-congress government in Bihar. In 1977,he was made revenue minister in Government of Bihar. In 1989 and 1991 General Elections,he won from Chatra constituency and subsequently appointed to Rural Development ministry in the cabinet of V.P Singh. Verma has served as state president of Samyukta Socialist Party for 9 terms,for the state of Bihar. [8]
In 1977,he was elected to Bihar Legislative Assembly from Gurua Assembly constituency,as a candidate of Janata Party. He was also appointed as president of "Bihar State Farmers Commission" by Nitish Kumar,the post,which he held till his death. [11]
Verma also played important role in bringing Bhagwati Devi into active politics. In 1960s,Devi,who belonged to rat-eater Musahar caste,used to work as casual labourer as stone crusher. On one such occasion,while she was breaking the stones with rural women and discussing about the rights of women with other labourers,she was spotted by Verma. Verma informed Ram Manohar Lohia about her,and in 1969,Lohia granted her ticket to contest state assembly elections as a candidate of Samyukta Socialist Party. Thus,in 1969,Devi became a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly. [12]
Verma also established himself as writer,his works were primarily in Hindi language and dealt with social issues. He authored "Anna Sankat","Khet Mazdooron Ka Sawat","Bihar Mein Savinaya Awagya","Bihar Mein Madhyavadhi Chunav","Cheeni Hamle Ka Mukabila","Apani Lathi Apana Raj" in Hindi. Besides this,he was also the editor of 'Mook Awaj',a Hindi Weekly published from Gaya since 1980. [5]
In order to commemorate his work in field of education,several colleges are established in various parts of Bihar and Jharkhand. In Gaya,Bihar,Upendera Nath Verma Inter college has been established,which is named after him. [13]
Janata Dal (United) ("People’s Party (United)"),abbreviated as JD(U),is an Indian political party with political presence mainly in eastern and north-eastern India. JD(U) is recognised as a state party in the states of Bihar and Manipur and is a part of government in both the states. JD(U) heads the government in Bihar and is part of the NDA government in Manipur. JD(U) won 12 seats in the 2024 Indian general election,making it the seventh largest party in the Lok Sabha. JD(U) states that they believe in promoting social justice and lifting up marginalized peoples.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation is a communist political party in India. The party is represented in Bihar and Jharkhand Legislative Assemblies. Since 2023,the party is also a member of the INDIA electoral alliance. In Bihar,party has significant base amongst the Extremely Backward Castes and the Schedule Castes. It was successful in mobilising Upper Backward Caste group such as Koeris in some districts of central Bihar,prior to the rise of Lalu Prasad Yadav. The party faced existential crisis when a large section of its Koeri and Yadav support base was defected to Rashtriya Janata Dal in 1990s. However,the ideological commitment of its cadre protected it from disintegration. It staged a comeback in politics after winning twelve seats in Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2020 and by sending two of its members to Lok Sabha in 2024 Indian general elections.
Although India is a parliamentary democracy,the country's politics has become dynastic or with high level of nepotism,possibly due to the absence of party organizations,independent civil-society associations which mobilize support for a party,or centralized financing of elections. The dynastic phenomenon is present at the national,state,regional,and district level. The Nehru–Gandhi family has produced three Indian prime ministers,and family members have largely led the Congress party since 1978. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also has several dynastic leaders. In addition to the major national parties,other national and regional parties such as Shiromani Akali Dal,Shiv Sena,Samajwadi Party,Rashtriya Janata Dal,Janata Dal Secular,Jharkhand Mukti Morcha,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam,Kerala Congress,Jammu &Kashmir National Conference,Indian Union Muslim League,AIMIM,and the Nationalist Congress Party are all dominated by families,mostly those of the party founders.
R.L.P. Verma was a former member of Lok Sabha and a leader of Bhartiya Janata Party. He was elected to Lok Sabha from Kodarma in Jharkhand state in India for six terms. Verma represented Jamua Assembly constituency once,from where he was elected in legislative assembly elections in 1972,on the ticket of Bhartiya Jana Sangh. However,on the call of Jai Prakash Narayan for Total Revolution,he resigned from his legislative assembly membership and became a part of the "Sampurna Kranti movement". He was made a candidate of Janata Party for Lok Sabha elections in 1977,and was subsequently elected to lower house of Indian Parliament. Verma has represented Kodarma Lok Sabha constituency for five terms,making him the longest serving Member of Parliament (MP) from this constituency. He was one of the two Member of Parliament of BJP during transformation of Jana Sangh into Bhartiya Janata Party. Verma played instrumental role in strengthening Bhartiya Jana Sangh and later Bhartiya Janata Party in Bihar-Jharkhand region.
Karakat Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 40 Lok Sabha (parliamentary) constituencies in Bihar state in eastern India. This constituency came into existence in 2008 as a part of the implementation of delimitation of parliamentary constituencies based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of India constituted in 2002. Karakat is considered as a Kushwaha dominated constituency.

Rashtriya Lok Samta Party was a political party in India led by Upendra Kushwaha. It was launched on 3 March 2013 and was based in the state of Bihar. The party came into existence as a result of a feud between Nitish Kumar and Upendra Kushwaha,after which Kushwaha left The Nitish Kumar lead Janata Dal (United) and formed his own party. It has faced multiple rebellions and desertions since 2015. Upendra Kumar Singh,commonly known as Upendra Kushwaha is an Indian politician,and a former Member of Bihar Legislative Council and Bihar Legislative Assembly. He has also served as Minister of State for Human Resources and Development in the Government of India. Kushwaha is a former Member of Parliament (MP) from the Karakat constituency in Rohtas district,Bihar,and a former member of the Rajya Sabha. He was the leader of Rashtriya Samata Party (RSP),his own party,which merged into Janata Dal (United) (JDU) in 2009. Later,he formed Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP),which also merged with JD(U) in 2021. On 20 February 2023,Kushwaha resigned from all positions in Janata Dal (United) and formed his own party called Rashtriya Lok Morcha due to his political problems with JD(U) and Nitish Kumar.
Ramdeo Verma,also known as Ramdeo Mahto,was an Indian politician,belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Verma served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Bibhutipur from 1980 to 1985 and 1990 to 2010. His wife Manju Prakash also served as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Buxar from 1990 to 2000. He was a leader of the communist movement in the region of Bibhutipur,popularly known as 'Moscow' of Samastipur. After 2020 November,he joined Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation.

Babu Jagdeo Prasad,alternatively spelled as Jagdev Prasad and popularly known as Jagdev Babu,was an Indian politician and a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly who served as Bihar's deputy chief minister in 1968 for four days in the Satish Prasad Singh cabinet. A great socialist and a proponent of Arjak culture,he was the founder of Shoshit Dal and was a staunch antagonist and critic of India's caste system. He was nicknamed as the "Lenin of Bihar".
Sahdeo Prasad Yadav was an Indian politician and a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly of India. He represented the Kurtha constituency in Arwal district of Bihar. He had been a Mukhiya of Chitaukhar-Jalalpur Panchayat for almost 25 years. First he became an MLA in 1980 while being in Lok Dal party. He was elected in 1995 as a member of Janata Dal. Yadav started his political career in 1957 as an Independent candidate from Tikari constituency but lost. Later this constituency named as Konch,now again becomes Tikari constituency from 2010 onwards. He also fought from here as a candidate of Indian National Congress in 1967 but lost to U. N. Verma of Samyukta Socialist Party and in 1969 lost to Ram Balav Saran Singh.

In 2020 Bihar Assembly elections,he defeated Satyadev Kushwaha,the two times MLA from Kurtha Assembly to enter in Bihar Assembly for his third term.
