Vipps is a Norwegian mobile payment application designed for smartphones developed by DNB. Vipps was released May 30, 2015 and, having reached 1 million users by November 5, 2015, Vipps became Norway's largest payment application. Although Vipps was developed by DNB, customers of any Norwegian bank can use it. Vipps is a member of the European Mobile Payment Systems Association.

Vipps merged with MobilePay of Denmark and Finland in 2022 to form Vipps MobilePay. [2] The headquarters of the new company is in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, but all locations in other countries and the separate brand names are maintained. [3] As of 2022, Vipps had 4.2 million users in Norway (total population: 5.4 million), whereas MobilePay had more than 4.4 million users in Denmark (total population: 5.8 million) and more than 2 million users in Finland (total population: 5.5 million). Vipps is an application that gives the user the ability to make payments to a receiver's telephone number instead of an account number. If the receiver has a bank account in one of the owner banks of Vipps, the money is confirmed and available for the receiver within seconds. Other receivers have to register their credit card in Vipps and will get the money the next bank day. If a payment is made to a phone number not connected to Vipps, the receiver will get an SMS instructing them to download the application. If they do not, the payment will be cancelled. It is possible to send a request for payment, a kind of bill.

The application is designed for smartphones (newer iOS or Android versions, not Windows anymore). After downloading the Vipps application, there is an onboarding-process where the user assigns a credit- or debit card (Visa/MasterCard), personal- and account information. After registration, the user's account information is connected to the user's mobile telephone number. Each user must register a phone number, bank account, credit card and identity number, and all must be Norwegian.

Transfers under 5000 NOK are free. For larger transfers, Vipps charges the sender 1% of the total amount. The receiver never pays any fees.

Security

Vipps is protected by a user-defined four-digit identification code. For payments exceeding 2000 NOK, the application launches the Norwegian BankID<electronic identification for user authentication. There are also security checks in the applications during registration and payment. The phone numbers have no check digit but the name of receiver is shown before the payment is confirmed, provided the receiver has a Vipps account. If the receiver has no Vipps account, the sender must make sure the phone number is correct.

Social Payments

The users can add a user-image to their profile which will be visible to other users and in addition to payments the application lets users chat with each other.

Apple Pay is a mobile payment service by Apple Inc. that allows users to make payments in person, in iOS apps, and on the web. It is supported on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac. It digitizes and can replace a credit or debit card chip and PIN transaction at a contactless-capable point-of-sale terminal. It does not require Apple Pay-specific contactless payment terminals; it can work with any merchant that accepts contactless payments. It adds two-factor authentication via Touch ID, Face ID, PIN, or passcode. Devices wirelessly communicate with point of sale systems using near field communication (NFC), with an embedded secure element (eSE) to securely store payment data and perform cryptographic functions, and Apple's Touch ID and Face ID for biometric authentication.

Venmo is an American mobile payment service founded in 2009 and owned by PayPal since 2013. Venmo was aimed at friends and family who wish to split bills, e.g., for movies, dinner, rent, or event tickets etc. Account holders can transfer funds to others via a mobile phone app; both the sender and receiver must live in the United States. On Venmo, a little social network, users can observe how others who are sending money to one another interact with amusing emoticons. In 2021, the company handled $230 billion in transactions and generated $850 million in revenue.

Peer-to-peer transactions are electronic money transfers made from one person to another through an intermediary, typically referred to as a P2P payment application. P2P payments can be sent and received via mobile device or any home computer with access to the Internet, offering a convenient alternative to traditional payment methods.

MobilePay is a mobile payment application used in Denmark and Finland. The service allows payments by means of a smartphone application and was first introduced in 2013 by Danske Bank. It was introduced to Finland later in the same year and since 2017 it has been used by all banks in Denmark. As of 2022, MobilePay had more than 4.4 million users in Denmark and more than 2 million users in Finland. In 2022, MobilePay merged with Vipps of Norway to form Vipps MobilePay, but they maintain their separate brand names in each country. MobilePay is a member of the European Mobile Payment Systems Association.

BankAxept is the national payment system in Norway, used both physically and eventually digitally. It is an open system, so that anyone that has concession to operate bank business in Norway can join the network. The security of BankAxept is accomplished with the use of chip technology and PIN codes. Payments of less than NOK 500 can be carried contactless and without use of a PIN code. By using BankAxept, the money is charged from the cardholder's account immediately, and it is always verified whether or not there is money on the account.

Google Wallet is a digital wallet platform developed by Google. It is available for the Android, Wear OS, and Fitbit OS operating systems, and was announced on May 11, 2022, at the 2022 Google I/O keynote. It began rolling out on Android smartphones on July 18 while co-existing with the 2020 Google Pay app.
