WQKT FM began broadcasting as WWST-FM and for many years rebroadcasting the programming of its sister AM station WWST. The station signed on in 1947 at 5,000 watts while playing block programming. In 1962 in the wave of Rock Music broadcasting on the radio, WWST followed suit until the 1980s when it began Country Programming. It changed to WQKT on October 10, 1983 when it adopted its present country music format now using Westwood One's Mainstream Country feed.

On November 13, 2023, it was reported Dix would sell WQKT and WKVX to River Radio Ministries for $3,050,000. River took over operations on May 1, 2024, at which time the station will flip to Christian adult contemporary under the company's "The River" network, primarily simulcasting WCVO. The station's local morning show "Morning Edition" will move to WKVX, and while the station will keep their farming news program "Farm Hour with Ron Hamilton", as well as their broadcasts of local high school and College of Wooster athletics, it will drop all professional sports with the sale, though the Cavaliers will remain on the station through their playoff run.
