WSTR is an English pop punk band based in Liverpool, England. Their current lineup consists of Sammy Clifford (vocals), Phil Wynne (guitar) and Sean Carson (drums). They are currently signed to Life or Death Records, after previously being signed to No Sleep Records and Hopeless Records.

History

Formation and SKRWD EP (2015)

Formed in 2015, the band signed with No Sleep Records and released its first single, "Graveyard Shift", in March, [1] of which the music video included cameos from members of Neck Deep. Following this, WSTR played at the Pinky Swear Records Fest in Manchester on 2 May, [2] headlined by Man Overboard, and at Furyfest in Liverpool on 3 May, [3] also playing at the Empire Festival in Sheffield on 17 May. [4] WSTR played at the Jump On Demand Records Festival, also in Liverpool, later that June, [5] the Hevy Fest in Port Lympne, Kent, and the Make A Scene Festival in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, in August. [6]

The band's first EP, SKRWD, was released on 4 September. [7] It was produced and recorded by Seb Barlow, the brother of Neck Deep's frontman Ben Barlow (later becoming a member himself), at Celestial Recordings. They then played at the Hype Fest in Birmingham on 28 November. [8] In December, WSTR was nominated for Best British Newcomer by Rock Sound , with Boston Manor winning the category.

Red, Green or Inbetween (2016-2017)

In early 2016, the band was included in Kerrang!'s Class of 2016 list. [9] They played at the Less Than Three Festival in Derby [10] and opened for Neck Deep on the European leg of their World Tour, [11] with Creeper. Later in July, they played the 2000Trees Festival at Upcote Farm in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. [12] They released a single, "Lonely Smiles", from their upcoming album in September. [13]

In support of the first album, the band went on its first headlining tour, "The Inbetween Tour", [14] from October to November 2016, with support from Milestones, also playing at the Slam Dunk Festival. [15] During this time, the band recorded an acoustic version of the album's second single, "Footprints", [16] which was made available on a "name your price" basis on their Bandcamp page. They additionally opened for Roam on a UK/Ireland tour [17] in support of the album, Backbone , and released a third single, "Featherweight".

On 20 January 2017, the band released its first full-length album, Red, Green or Inbetween. [18] They then supported Seaway on a UK tour, [19] with The Gospel Youth, and returned to Slam Dunk [20] later that summer. WSTR also played at the Truck Festival at Hill Farm in Oxfordshire, [21] the Reading and Leeds Festivals, [22] the Deadbolt Festival in Manchester [23] and the 2Q Festival in Lincoln, as well as opening for With Confidence on an Australian tour. [24]

Signing to Hopeless Records and Identity Crisis (2018)

On 4 June 2018, the band announced that it was signing with Hopeless Records, [25] and followed the signing by a playing a set at the Download Festival [26] in the UK. WSTR opened for As It Is on several legs of the okay. tour, first in Europe with Courage My Love [27] and then in the UK with Like Pacific and Grayscale. [28] On 31 August, a second LP was released, Identity Crisis, [29] which was led by the singles "Bad to the Bone", "Crisis" and "Silly Me". To support its release, the band joined Neck Deep on the second North American leg of The Peace and the Panic Tour with Trophy Eyes and Stand Atlantic, [30] and went on a headlining UK tour with Between You & Me and Hey Charlie. [31]

"Filthy", Give Yourself a Hell and SKRWD: Reimagined EPs (2019-2020)

In early 2019, WSTR went on tour again as the supporting act for The Faim's UK tour. A cover EP titled Give Yourself a Hell was released, [32] with cover versions of "Give Yourself a Try" by The 1975 and "Gives You Hell" by The All-American Rejects, and played a third Slam Dunk Festival [33] that summer. In autumn, WSTR embarked on the full run of The Noise & Ones to Watch Presents Stand Atlantic and The Faim Co-Headline U.S. Tour, [34] with fellow openers Hold Close and Point North playing on select dates. While on tour, they released a new song, "Filthy". [35]

On 25 November, WSTR set out on a headlining UK tour, [36] starting in Brighton and ending in Nottingham on 8 December. They then joined Grayscale, Hot Mulligan and LURK on the Nella Vita North American Tour: Part II. [37]

On 14 August 2020, WSTR released new versions of two previous songs, "Ain't Great" and "South Drive", from their first EP SKRWD on an EP titled SKRWD: Reimagined. [38]

Future (2021)

In late 2021, WSTR announced they had signed a record deal with Life or Death Records and released the single "Jobbo" shortly after.

The band would return at a sold out all-day festival, Twisted Summer Jam, in July 2022 alongside Trash Boat in Doncaster, United Kingdom. This show would be the introduction of new guitarist Phil Wynne and new drummer Sean Carson.

On October 28, 2022, a new single “Bot Lobby” was released from an upcoming album due for release in 2023. This was then followed by a headline UK tour starting with a sold out show at the Night & Day in Manchester. Concluding with a hometown show in Liverpool on November 19, 2022.

On January 27, 2023, the band released another new single, titled “3 Days Sober”.

‘Til the Wheels Fall Off (2023-Present)

In March 2023 the band announced their long awaited third album, titled ‘Til the Wheels Fall Off’. This was accompanied by the release of the single and title track from the album. 'Til the Wheels Fall Off was released worldwide via Life or Death Records on May 26, 2023.

Since the announcement a further two singles (‘Poor Boy’ & ‘Until Then’) have been released along with a 7 day headline UK tour planned for September. [39]

Name

Originally named Waster, the group discovered a band with the same name from Canada. Because both bands were selling under the same name on iTunes, the Canadian band issued a "cease and desist" letter. The group ultimately decided to keep the most similar name as possible, removing the vowels, leaving simply WSTR. [40]

Musical style and influences

WSTR is generally credited as a pop punk band. The group's lead singer, Sammy Clifford, has said that many of his musical influences were from the United States, including Blink-182 and New Found Glory. [41]

Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. At the end of 2015, Nemati was replaced by Oliver Burdett and touring keyboardist/second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official band member. A third EP, The Stranger, was released in 2016 and reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten.

<i>Discovering the Waterfront</i> 2005 studio album by Silverstein

Discovering the Waterfront is the second album by Canadian post-hardcore band Silverstein. The album was promoted with three music videos for the tracks "Smile in Your Sleep", "Discovering the Waterfront", and "My Heroine".

Random Hand is a British ska band, formed in Keighley in 2002. Their sound fuses influences from many genres, including ska, reggae, punk rock, metal, hip hop and dub. The band is typically associated with the punk subculture, due to its ethics and lyrical content. Their lyrical themes are mostly of a sociopolitical nature, however recent albums Inhale/Exhale, Seething Is Believing and self-titled Random Hand feature more personal lyrics and subject matter.

We Are the In Crowd is an American rock band from Poughkeepsie, New York, formed in 2009. It consists of Taylor Jardine, Jordan Eckes, Mike Ferri, Rob Chianelli, and Cameron Hurley. They released their debut EP, Guaranteed to Disagree, in 2010, and followed it up with their first full-length album, Best Intentions, in 2011. Their second full-length album, Weird Kids, was released in 2014. The band announced a hiatus in February 2016. They have since performed at Slam Dunk Festival 2021, and When We Were Young Festival in 2024.

Coldrain are a Japanese rock band from Nagoya, Japan, who were formed in 2007. The band combines melodic singing with screams typical of the post-hardcore genre. Although the band is Japanese, all of their songs are written in English. Since its formation in 2007, the band retained the same lineup with no member changes. The lineup consists of lead vocalist Masato Hayakawa, guitarists Ryo Yokochi (Y.K.C.) and Kazuya Sugiyama (Sugi), bassist Ryo Shimizu (RxYxO) and drummer Katsuma Minatani. Hayakawa has a Japanese father and an American mother and speaks both Japanese and English fluently.

Bury Tomorrow are a British metalcore band formed in 2006 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. The band is composed of six members; lead vocalist Daniel Winter-Bates, bassist Davyd Winter-Bates, drummer Adam Jackson, lead guitarist Kristan Dawson, who replaced founding guitarist Mehdi Vismara in 2013, rhythm guitarist Ed Hartwell, and keyboardist and vocalist Tom Prendergast, who both replaced Jason Cameron in 2021. Bury Tomorrow have released seven studio albums, their most recent being The Seventh Sun, released on 31 March 2023.

Tonight Alive were an Australian rock band from Sydney. For the majority of the band's career, the line-up consisted of lead vocalist Jenna McDougall, guitarists Jake Hardy and Whakaio Taahi, bassist Cameron Adler, and drummer Matty Best. Formed in 2008 by Hardy, Adler and Taahi, soon joined by McDougall and Best, Tonight Alive recorded and self-released the EPs All Shapes & Disguises and Consider This. In 2010, Tonight Alive signed to both Fearless Records and Sony Music Entertainment Australia and released their 2011 debut album What Are You So Scared Of?. The record was officially released in the UK and US in October 2012, a year after its initial release in Australia.

Seaway is a Canadian rock band from Oakville, Ontario signed to Pure Noise Records and Dine Alone Records. The band has released three EPs and four studio albums.

<i>The Peace and the Panic</i> 2017 studio album by Neck Deep

The Peace and the Panic is the third studio album by Welsh pop punk band Neck Deep. It is the band’s first album to feature lead guitarist Sam Bowden, formerly of the bands Blood Youth and Climates and the last to feature founding bassist and backing vocalist Fil Thorpe-Evans before his departure in September 2018. The group planned to work on material for their follow-up album by the end of the year, though were unable due to tour commitments. In June 2016, the band went on a two-week writing retreat in Wales, creating 40 song drafts in the process. At the end of the year, vocalist Ben Barlow said the group had around 30 demos and two completed songs. Following a support slot for A Day to Remember in early 2017, the band began recording The Peace and the Panic in March and April in Los Angeles, California. Mike Green produced the album with assistance from engineers Will McCoy and Colin Schwanke. Most of the album was mixed by Neal Avron, while Green mixed three of the songs.

Grayscale are an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2011, the group currently features lead vocalist and guitarist Collin Walsh, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Andrew Kyne, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Dallas Molster and drummer Nick Veno. The band formed from the Philadelphia pop punk scene, building a strong reputation and gaining steam among fans and music lovers. On April 14, 2015 Grayscale released its first EP Change gaining much success.

Decade are a British rock band from Bath, England. Formed in 2009, the band consists of lead vocalist Alex Sears, guitarist Joe Marriner, guitarist and backing vocalist Connor Fathers and bassist Harry Norton. Encapsulated by the locution 'Loud quiet happy sad', Decade currently have two studio albums, Good Luck and Pleasantries, a self-titled EP as well as an EP they pretend does not exist.

Tigress are a British rock band from Chelmsford, England. They first performed together as the Hype Theory but reformed as Tigress in August 2015, abandoning their early songs. Tigress consists of vocalist Katy Jackson, guitarists Tom Harrison and Sean Bishop, bassist Jack Divey and drummer Joshua Coombes. The band is currently independent. They were previously signed to Humble Angel Records where they released their debut album 'Pura Vida' on the 3rd September 2021 and LAB Records where they released their debut EP Human on 13 November 2015, follow up EP Like It Is on 12 May 2017 and 2018 EP Who Cares. All releases were met with much acclaim across a number of major and independent music publications.

Composure is the third studio album by American pop-punk band Real Friends. It was released on July 13, 2018 through Fearless Records. It is their last release through the company as well as their last to feature lead vocalist Dan Lambton before his departure from the group in 2020.
