The 2024 United States secretary of state elections are scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024, to elect the secretaries of state in seven states. These elections took place concurrently with several other federal, state, and local elections.

Contents

The elections for secretary of state had taken on heightened importance due to former President Donald Trump's baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Many had argued that election officials such as secretaries of state could have the power to overturn the 2024 election, should its outcome be disagreeable to the losing candidate.

The previous elections for this group of states took place in 2020. The secretary of state of Vermont serves two-year terms and was last elected in 2022.

Going into the election, there were 26 Republican secretaries of state and 21 Democratic secretaries of state. 4 Democratic secretaries of state were up for election, of whom LaVonne Griffin-Valade of Oregon is retiring. 3 Republican secretaries of state were up for election, of whom Jay Ashcroft of Missouri and Mac Warner of West Virginia are retiring.

Going into these elections, this class of secretaries of state is made up of 4 Democrats and 3 Republicans. Democrats are defending one state won by Donald Trump in 2020 (North Carolina), while Republicans do not hold any states won by Joe Biden.

Missouri

Incumbent Republican Jay Ashcroft was eligible to serve a third term, but has instead decided to run for governor. [1]

Businesswoman Valentina Gomez, state senator Denny Hoskins, state senate President pro tempore Caleb Rowden, Greene County clerk Shane Schoeller and state representative Adam Schwadron are running in the Republican primary. [2] [3] [6] [7] [8]

State representative Barbara Phifer, accountant Monique Williams, and travel agent Haley Jacobson are running in the Democratic primary. [4] A fourth candidate, Gavin Bena, initially filed to run but later withdrew from the race. [16] [17]

Montana

Incumbent Republican Christi Jacobsen is running for re-election to a second term. [18] Democratic newspaper owner Jesse Mullen is running against her. [19]

Oregon

Incumbent Democrat LaVonne Griffin-Valade was appointed by Governor Tina Kotek after Shemia Fagan resigned. [21] She was eligible to run for a full term, but decided to retire. [22]

Democrats state senate President pro tempore James Manning Jr. and state treasurer Tobias Read are running for the position. [23] [24] Property broker Brent Barker is the lone Republican candidate as of February 2024. [25]

Vermont

Incumbent Democrat Sarah Copeland Hanzas is eligible to run for a second term, but she has not stated whether she will do so.

Washington

Incumbent Democrat Steve Hobbs is eligible to run for re-election, but has not stated whether he will do so.

Former West Virginia Republican Party chair Kris Warner won the Republican nomination defeating state senator Kenny Mann, former state delegate Ken Reed, former Democratic House of Delegates minority leader Doug Skaff, and Putnam County clerk Brian Wood. [26]

Following the resignation of Shemia Fagan as secretary of state, Governor Tina Kotek appointed Griffin-Valade to the office in June 2023 to complete Fagan's term, which runs until January 2025. Previously, Griffin-Valade was the Portland City Auditor and auditor for Multnomah County, Oregon. She has published four crime fiction novels as well as other essays and stories.

    The 2024 Oregon Secretary of State election will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect the Oregon secretary of state, the highest office in the state after the governor.
