Garikipati Narasimha Rao is an Indian scholar, litterateur, and avadhani from Andhra Pradesh. [2] [3] In 1996, he performed Avadhanam with 1116 Pruchchakas for 21 days in Kakinada. He also delivers lectures on personality development based on dharmic culture and way of life. He regularly appears on Telugu TV channels like SVBC, Bhakti TV, and ABN Andhra Jyothi giving discourses on ancient Hindu texts like Bhagavadgita, Ramayana , and Mahabharata . In 2022, he was awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award Padma Shri by the government of India. [4]

Personal life

Rao was born on 14 September 1958 to the couple Venkata Surya Narayana and Venkata Ramanamma. He married Sarada who is from East Godavari, Annavaram. [1] He named his two sons Sri Sri and Gurajada. His elder son was named after great Telugu poet Srirangam Srinivasarao, who has completed his Hotel management and working as a General manager. His younger son Gurajada who was named after great Telugu poet Gurajada Apparao, has pursued his Master's, M.Phil. and PhD in Telugu at University of Hyderabad. As a motivational and spiritual speaker, Dr. Gurajada has delivered over 200 lectures across Telugu states.

Career

Rao started performing Avadhanams in the year 1972. Avadhanis are respected for their abilities to spin out verses conforming to Telugu grammar on literally any subject that audience may throw at them, as a challenge. He has conducted more than 288 avadhanams, including Dvigunita Avadhanam at Dallas for the American Telugu Association in 2002. Rao is known for his Dhāraṇā (memorising and reciting), which is a key requirement for performing Avadhanams.

On 26 November 2018, while at Koti Deepotsavam Stage, Rao emotionally announced that very soon he will retire from discoursing pravachanams and public speeches after completing already accepted projects, in order to attain inner peace and enlightenment but later he changed his decision per public requests and to help and activate the society through his way of speeches. [5]

Gurajada Venkata Apparao was an Indian playwright, dramatist, poet, and writer known for his works in Telugu theatre. Rao wrote the play Kanyasulkam in 1892, which is considered as the greatest play in the Telugu language. One of the pioneers of Indian theatre, Rao holds the titles Kavisekhara and Abyudaya Kavitha Pithamahudu. In 1910, Rao scripted the widely known Telugu patriotic song "Desamunu Preminchumanna".

Telugu literature is the body of works written in the Telugu language. It consists of poems, short stories, novels, plays, and song lyrics, among others. There is some indication that Telugu literature dates at least to the middle of the first millennium, the first extant works are from the 11th century when the Mahabharata was first translated to Telugu from Sanskrit by Nannaya. The language has experienced a golden age under the patronage of the Vijayanagara Emperor-Poet Krishnadevaraya.

Avadhānaṃ is a literary performance popular from the medieval era in India. Avadhānaṃ was originated and primarily cultivated among Telugu poets. It involves the partial improvisation of poems using specific themes, metres, forms, or words. The true purpose of an Avadhanam event thus is the showcasing, through entertainment, of superior mastery of cognitive capabilities - of observation, memory, multitasking, task switching, retrieval, reasoning and creativity in multiple modes of intelligence - literature, poetry, music, mathematical calculations, puzzle solving etc.

Kakarla Subba Rao was an Indian radiologist who served as the first director of Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. A.S. Narayana is an Indian dental surgeon, a former Professor of Dental Surgery in Government Dental College, Hyderabad and a former State Coordinator of the Andhra Pradesh School Health Services known for the free dental camps he has conducted across the villages in Andhra Pradesh since 1974. As Ashtavadhani, he has given 170 performances and has written and published 50 books across various genres. His most notable literary contribution is his performance of Avadhanam – a literary performance. He has received an honorary D Litt from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University and a Distinguished Teacher award from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh.
