Kolakaluri Enoch (born 1 July 1939) is an Indian writer, teacher, and former Vice Chancellor of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. [1] He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of literature. [2]

Kolakaluri Enoch was born in a family with meagre financial resources, to Ramaiah and Veeramma, in the small village of Vejandla, in Guntur district, [4] in the present day Andhra Pradesh state of India. [3] [5] His higher education was at the Andhra University from where he secured BA (Hons) in 1959. During his college days, he received the first prize for short story, poem, and play in the annual competitions for three years consecutively, from 1957 to 1959. Subsequently, he joined Sri Venkateswara University, in the temple town of Tirupati, and obtained a PhD.

Kolakaluri Enoch started his career by joining Andhra University as a faculty member. [5] He had a notable career which took him to the post of the Vice Chancellor of the Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, the institution from where he secured his doctoral degree. [6]

Career and legacy

Kolakaluri Enoch has a fairly large body of work, which comprises 180 poems, 180 stories, 9 novels and 30 plays apart from other efforts on literary criticisms and Children's literature. Many of his works have been translated into other languages such as English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. His works have been subjected to critical studies for educational purposes and nine PhDs and 5 MPhils have been reported to be based on them. One of his stories, Talalenodu (A Person without head), was a prescribed text book for intermediate course at Andhra University during the period from 1987 to 1995.

Enoch, belonging to a backward community, was also reported to be a social activist and, championed the cause of Dalits through his works. [5] He was a member of the jury for T. V. Nandi awards [7] of the Government of Andhra Pradesh in the year 1992. [6]

He is also reported to have received the Ambedkar National Literary Award (1997), Juluri Nagarajarao Literary Award (1977), Paidi Lakshmaiah Literary Award (1998), and Madras Telugu Akademi Literary Award (2001) [6] Some of the educational awards received by him are:

Some of the titles conferred on him by local cultural bodies are the Andhra Shri by the Sri Saraswati Journal in 1961, Kalasaraswati by Kalavedika, Hyderabad in 1985, Sahiti Samrat by Kalarayam, Hyderabad in 1991 and Kathaka Chakravarti by Joshua Samithi, Vinukonda in 1999.

Dr. Boyi Bhimanna, transliterated alternatively as Bheemanna or Bheemana, was a Telugu poet.

Madhunapantula Satyanarayana Sastry is one of the most eminent personalities in pure Telugu literature of recent times. He lived in Rajahmundry in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh of South India. His magnum opus is Andhra Puranam. He was awarded the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi Award for this work.

Kethu Viswanatha Reddy, also known as Ketu Visvanathareddi, was an Indian short story writer, novelist, and essayist. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu in 1996 for his short story Kethu Viswanatha Reddy Kathalu.

Nayani Krishnakumari was an Indian scholar, poet, researcher, speaker in Telugu and an active participant in literary and cultural organizations. She served several institutions in various capacities. She received several awards such as Swarnakankanam, instituted by Desoddharaka Kasinathuni Nageswara Rao, Best Telugu Writer award from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, and Sahitya Akademi among others.

Balantrapu Rajanikanta Rao was an Indian writer, composer and poet in the Telugu language. He was the son of Balantrapu Venkatarao, one of modern Telugu poet-duo "Kavi Rajahamsa" Venkata Parvateswara Kavulu. He won several national and state level awards for his work. He died in April 2018 at the age of 98.

Viswanatha Satyanarayana was a 20th-century Telugu writer. His works included poetry, novels, dramatic play, short stories and speeches, covering a wide range of subjects such as analysis of history, philosophy, religion, sociology, political science, linguistics, psychology and consciousness studies, epistemology, aesthetics and spiritualism. He was a student of the illustrious Telugu writer Chellapilla Venkata Sastry, of the Tirupati Venkata Kavulu duo. Viswanatha's wrote in both a modern and classical style, in complex modes. His popular works include Ramayana Kalpavrukshamu, Kinnersani Patalu and the novel Veyipadagalu. Syed Saleem is a Telugu writer. He has written thirty novels, about 300 short stories and more than 150 poems. His fiction has been translated into English, Hindi, Marathi, Oriya, Malayalam, Kannada and Tamil languages. His work is characterised by his humanitarianism and poetic expression. His novel Kaluthunna Poolathota won the Sahitya Akademi Award in Telugu, 2010.

Asavadi Prakasa Rao was an Indian poet, critic, translator and scholar, who is known for his poetry and prose works. He is noted for his significant contribution to Telugu and Sanskrit literature. In January 2021, he was awarded India's fourth-highest civilian award the Padma Shri in the Arts and Literature category. As Ashtavadhani, he has given 170 performances and has written and published 50 books across various genres. His most notable literary contribution is his performance of Avadhanam – a literary performance. He has received an honorary D Litt from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University and a Distinguished Teacher award from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Ketavarapu Katyayani, best known by her pen name Katyayani Vidmahe, is an Indian writer and academic. Her work focuses on Telugu literature, particularly feminist and Marxist writing.
