South Wimbledon is an area of Wimbledon in south-west London in the London Borough of Merton, England.
It is marked on an Ordnance Survey map of 1876 as New Wimbledon and on a 1907 map as South Wimbledon. [1] The name is derived from Wimbledon, which is located to the North.
South Wimbledon formed the northeastern section of the parish of Merton, with the separate parish of Wimbledon located to the north. The parish became the Merton Urban District in 1907, renamed Merton and Morden in 1913. South Wimbledon has formed part of the London Borough of Merton since 1965.
South Wimbledon tube station was opened in 1926 on the corner of Merton High Street and Morden Road. [2]
Wimbledon town centre is to the north, Morden to the south, Colliers Wood is to the east and to the west are Merton Park and Wimbledon Chase.

It is situated southwest of Wimbledon Common, to the northwest of Wimbledon Chase and to the east of New Malden, in South West London. It is 7.8 miles (12.5 km) southwest of Charing Cross. Towards the north and west, either side of the borough boundary with the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames are the areas of Copse Hill and Coombe with their large detached houses, golf courses and gated lands. The Wimbledon and Sutton Railway (W&SR) was a railway company established by an Act of Parliament in 1910 to build a railway line in Surrey from Wimbledon to Sutton via Merton and Morden in the United Kingdom. The railway was promoted by local landowners hoping to increase the value of their land through its development for housing. It was initially planned that services on the railway would be operated by the London Underground's District Railway (DR) by an extension of its existing service from Wimbledon.
Morden was an authorised railway station planned by the Wimbledon and Sutton Railway (W&SR) and Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL) but never built. It was to be located close to the original centre of Morden village in the London Borough of Merton, in south-west London.
The Sutton Link is a planned new Tramlink line or separate bus rapid transit (BRT) in London, between Wimbledon or Colliers Wood via St Helier to Sutton. As of 2020, it is the only Tramlink extension actively being pursued by the Mayor of London and TfL as part of The Mayor's Transport Strategy 2018 and the New London Plan.
Morden Cemetery, also known as Battersea New Cemetery, is a cemetery in the Lower Morden area of the town of Morden within the London Borough of Merton, London, England. It opened on 17 March 1891. A crematorium in Morden Cemetery, North East Surrey Crematorium, is located near an area of the cemetery called the Gardens of Remembrance. The crematorium opened in 1958.
