List of Chinese prefecture-level cities by GDP

The scope listed in the table is prefecture-level cities, including direct-administered municipality and special administrative regions [ clarify ][ original research? ] that are equivalent in area and economic volume. The unit of measurement for the data listed is the local currency Chinese yuan. In order to facilitate international comparison, the local currency is converted into US dollars and the purchasing power parity (int'l dollar).

Methodology

Shown here are GDP figures publicized in provincial-level Statistical Yearbooks or official statistical communiques.

All GDP figures are based on the national currency Chinese yuan (code:CN¥). For an easy comparison they are converted into US dollars according to official average annual exchange rates, purchasing power parity (PPP) according to comparison of IMF WEO figures.

The international dollar, also known as Geary–Khamis dollar, is a hypothetical unit of currency that has the same purchasing power parity that the U.S. dollar had in the United States at a given point in time. It is mainly used in economics and financial statistics for various purposes, most notably to determine and compare the purchasing power parity and gross domestic product of various countries and markets. The economy of Beijing ranks among the most developed and prosperous cities in China. In 2013, the municipality's nominal gross domestic product (GDP) was CN¥1.95 trillion. It was about 3.43% of the country's total output, and ranked 13th among province-level administrative units. Per capita GDP, at CN¥93,213 (US$15,051) in nominal terms and Int $21,948 at purchasing power parity, was 2.2 times the national average and ranked second among province-level administrative units.

In 1945, China cofounded the International Monetary Fund (IMF) with 34 other nations. China was initially represented by the Republic of China. In April 1980, representation transferred to the People's Republic of China. The Chinese-IMF relationship mainly operates around affairs associated with IMF governance and the IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDR).
