The 1922 Shantou Typhoon was a devastating tropical cyclone that caused thousands of deaths in the Chinese city of Shantou in August 1922. This total makes it one of the deadliest known typhoons in history.
A tropical depression located near the Caroline Islands was first spotted July 27. It moved slowly to the northwest,gradually intensifying along the Philippine Sea. On July 31,it crossed northern Luzon, [1] and entered the northernmost part of the South China Sea. [2] It then intensified more and made landfall on the Chinese coast near the city of Shantou (formerly romanized as Swatow) late on August 2 or early on August 3. [1] It quickly dissipated inland later.
The minimum known central pressure of this typhoon is 27.53 inches of mercury (932 mb). [3] At one point,the winds were estimated to have a speed exceeding 100 mph. [4]

Due to the typhoon passing through a then-lightly inhabited part of the Philippines,no reports of significant impact were received. [3]
In Shantou,the typhoon caused a storm surge of at least 12 ft above normal. [4] The rain was heavy,and left enough water to leave the land saturated for a few days. [13] Shantou was an unfortunate city,as around 5,000 people (out of a population of about 65,000) perished in the storm. [1] Some nearby villages were totally destroyed. [14] Several ships near the coast were totally wrecked. [4] Other ones were blown as far as two miles inland. [14] The area around the city had around another 50,000 casualties. [4] The total death toll was above 60,000, [15] and may have been higher than 100,000. [4]
The 50,000 to 100,000 deaths–100,000+ deaths caused by this typhoon make it one of the deadliest tropical cyclones in the western north Pacific Ocean. The other typhoons with comparable death totals include another typhoon that hit China in 1912 and 1975's Typhoon Nina. [16] [17] [15]
The 2002 Pacific typhoon season was a slightly above average Pacific typhoon season,producing twenty-six named storms,fifteen becoming typhoons,and eight super typhoons. It had an ACE over 400 units,making it one of the most active seasons worldwide. It was an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation,in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season ran throughout 2002,though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm,Tapah,developed on January 11,while the season's last named storm,Pongsona,dissipated on December 11. The season's first typhoon,Mitag,reached typhoon status on March 1,and became the first super typhoon of the year four days later.
The 1999 Pacific typhoon season was the last Pacific typhoon season to use English names as storm names. It also featured the lowest number of typhoons on record,with only five reaching this intensity. This was mainly due to a strong La Niña which persisted from last year. It also featured the least amount of ACE produced on record. The season was also below-average in named storms,with only 20 of such spawning. This season also featured multiple landfalls in Hong Kong. It had no official bounds;it ran year-round in 1999,but most tropical cyclones tend to form in the northwestern Pacific Ocean between May and November. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The first named storm,Hilda,developed on January 6,while the last named storm,Gloria,dissipated on November 16.
The 1995 Pacific typhoon season was a slightly below average season in terms of named storms,ending a 6-year stretch of above average activity. It occurred all year round,though most tropical cyclones formed between May and November.
Typhoon Nina,known in the Philippines as Typhoon Bebeng,was a deadly tropical cyclone in the summer of 1975. It formed on July 30 and gradually intensified as it moved generally to the west. On August 2,Nina reached peak intensity,and a day later the typhoon struck Taiwan. It weakened before moving ashore southeastern China. While moving slowly through central China,it dropped heavy rainfall and caused several dam failures,including the Banqiao Dam. It is one of the deadliest typhoons in the Pacific. Flooding from the Banqiao Dam collapse killed 26,000 people,with 100,000 more dying from subsequent famine and diseases.
Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri,known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Lagalag,killed hundreds of people in the wake of a deadly flood season in China. The system developed from a large monsoonal system that persisted toward the end of July 2002 near the Philippines. On August 2,a tropical depression formed off the northwest coast of Luzon and moved west-northwestward. Late on August 3,it intensified into Tropical Storm Kammuri off the coast of Hong Kong. A weakening ridge turned the storm northward toward the coast of China. The storm made landfall with late on August 4,after reaching peak winds of 100 km/h (65 mph). The system dissipated over the mountainous coastline of eastern China and merged with a cold front on August 7.
The effects of tropical cyclones include heavy rain,strong wind,large storm surges near landfall,and tornadoes. The destruction from a tropical cyclone,such as a hurricane or tropical storm,depends mainly on its intensity,its size,and its location. Tropical cyclones remove forest canopy as well as change the landscape near coastal areas,by moving and reshaping sand dunes and causing extensive erosion along the coast. Even well inland,heavy rainfall can lead to landslides in mountainous areas. Their effects can be sensed over time by studying the concentration of the Oxygen-18 isotope within caves.
During 2017 tropical cyclones formed within seven different tropical cyclone basins,located within various parts of the Atlantic,Pacific and Indian Oceans. During the year,a total of 146 tropical cyclones had formed. 88 tropical cyclones had been named by either a Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) or a Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC). The strongest and deadliest tropical cyclone was Hurricane Maria with a minimum barometric pressure of 908 mbar and killing 3,000 people in Puerto Rico and Dominica. The costliest tropical cyclone of the year was Hurricane Harvey in the Atlantic,which struck Houston metropolitan area in August causing US$125 billion in damage,tying with Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone worldwide.

The costliest and deadliest tropical cyclone of the year was Typhoon Rusa,killing 238 in South Korea and causing $4.2 billion in damages. 26 Category 3 tropical cyclones,including eight Category 5 tropical cyclones formed in 2002. The accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index for the 2002,as calculated by Colorado State University was 812 units.
There were 30 tropical cyclones in the western Pacific Ocean in 1931,including 19 typhoons,as well as one that developed in December of the previous year. The most significant typhoon was one that struck eastern China near Shanghai in the midst of the country's worst floods on record;heavy rainfall caused levees to collapse along the Grand Canal,killing an estimated 300,000 people,including about 2,000 people overnight in the city of Gaoyou.

Three Category 5 tropical cyclones were formed in 1999. The accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index for the 1999,as calculated by Colorado State University was 606.4 units.
