<span class="mw-page-title-main">Şükrü Saracoğlu</span> 5th Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey from 1942 to 1946

Mehmet Şükrü Saracoğlu was a Turkish politician, the fifth Prime Minister of Turkey and the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs during the early stages of World War II. He signed the German–Turkish Treaty of Friendship in 1941, which would prevent Turkish involvement in the war. He was also the chairman of the Turkish sports club Fenerbahçe S.K. for 16 years between 1934 and 1950, including holding that post concurrently with his time as Prime Minister from 1942 to 1946.

The 5th Grand National Assembly of Turkey existed from 8 February 1935 to 3 April 1939. There were 444 MPs in the parliament all of which were the members of the Republican People's Party (CHP). 5th parliament was the first Turkish parliament in which women deputies were elected.

The 6th Grand National Assembly of Turkey existed from 26 March 1939 to 8 March 1943. There were 470 MPs in the parliament all of which were the members of the Republican People's Party (CHP).

The Independence Tribunal ofDiyarbakır is a court established in March 1925 in order to quell the Sheikh Said rebellion. The court was inspired by the Independence Tribunals which were established during the Turkish War of Independence and which were provided with extensive powers to subdue the enemies of the Government of Kemal Atatürk, and established following the issuing of the Law on the Maintenance of Order by the government of prime minister İsmet İnönü on the 4 March 1925. The law was to be valid for two years, after which the Independence Tribunal of Diyarbkır was disestablished.

The 1962 attempted coup in Turkey was led by the Commander of the Turkish Military Academy, Staff Colonel tr:Talat Aydemir and his associates, who were opposed to the democratically elected government in Turkey. Despite taking control of much of Ankara, the coup leaders quickly realised they could not prevail and surrendered without any loss of life occurring. Talat Aydemir went on to lead a further coup attempt in 1963.
