Southwest is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established as Reykjanes in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was renamed Southwest in 2003 when the Reykjanes area of constituency was merged into the Southern constituency following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Southwest is conterminous with the Capital region but excludes Reykjavík Municipality which has its own constituencies. The constituency currently elects 11 of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2021 parliamentary election it had 73,699 registered electors.

The Keflavík women's basketball team, commonly known as Keflavík, is the women's basketball department of Keflavík ÍF, based in the town of Reykjanesbær in Iceland. It is Iceland's most successful women's basketball team with 17 national championship. They currently play in Úrvalsdeild kvenna where they won the national championship in 2017. The club has won the Icelandic Basketball Cup a record fifteen times, including in 2017 and 2018.

Svava Rós Guðmundsdóttir is an Icelandic footballer, who has represented the Iceland national team on numerous occasions. At club level, she most recently played for S.L. Benfica on loan from NJ/NY Gotham.

Margrét Rannveig Ólafsdóttir is an Icelandic former professional footballer. She played 51 times for the Iceland women's national football team, scoring eight goals. Except for the 2001 season, in which she played for the Philadelphia Charge of the Women's United Soccer Association, Margrét spent her entire playing career with Breiðablik.

Anna Guðmundína Guðrún Borg was a Danish-Icelandic actress of stage and screen and autobiographer. The daughter of the Icelandic actress Stefanía Guðmundsdóttir, she grew up in a household where theatre was part of her daily life and began acting at age nine. Borg joined the Royal Danish Theatre in 1928, portraying strong and pure female characters, and also performed in the Dagmar Theatre and the National Theatre of Iceland. She and 11 other people were killed in an aeroplane accident near Oslo in April 1963 and her memoirs were published posthumously the following year. Borg was a recipient of the Ingenio et arti theatre award, the Tagea Brandt Rejselegat, the Läkerol's Culture Award and the Teaterkatten.
