The Icelandic Coast Guard is the service responsible for Iceland's coastal defence and maritime and aeronautical search and rescue. Its origins can be traced to 1859, when the corvette Ørnen started patrolling Icelandic waters. In 1906, Iceland's first purposely built guard-ship, Islands Falk, began operation. Iceland's own defense of its territorial waters began around 1920 and the Icelandic Coast Guard was formally founded on 1 July 1926. The first cannon was put on the trawler Þór in 1924 and on 23 June 1926 the first ship built for the Coast Guard, named Óðinn, arrived in Iceland. Three years later, on 14 July 1929 the coastal defence ship Ægir was added to the Coast Guard fleet.
Air Iceland Connect, formerly Flugfélag Íslands, was a regional airline with its head office at Reykjavík Airport in Reykjavík, Iceland. It operated scheduled services to domestic destinations across Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Its main bases are Reykjavík Airport and Akureyri Airport. It was a subsidiary of Icelandair Group and merged with Icelandair in 2021.
Bjarni Benediktsson was an Icelandic politician of the Independence Party who served as Prime Minister of Iceland from 1963 to 1970. His father, Benedikt Sveinsson (1877–1954), was a leader in the independence movement in Iceland and a member of the Althingi from 1908 to 1931.
Vilmundur Gylfason was an Icelandic politician, historian and poet. He was the son of Gylfi Þorsteinsson Gíslason and Guðrún Vilmundardóttir.
Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands (ISO) is an Icelandic orchestra based in Reykjavík, Iceland. Its primary concert venue is the Harpa Concert Hall. The Iceland Symphony is an autonomous public institution under the auspices of the Icelandic Ministry of Education. Iceland Symphony Orchestra made its home in Háskólabíó from 1961–2011, but moved into the new 1800-seat Harpa Concert Hall in spring 2011. The orchestra gives approximately sixty concerts each season. Per a 1982 law, the Iceland Symphony's primary financial sources are the Icelandic treasury (82%) and the City of Reykjavik (18%).
The Iceland women's national football team represents Iceland in international women's football. They are currently ranked as the 18th best women's national team in the world by FIFA as of December 2019. On 30 October 2008, the national team qualified to the 2009 UEFA Women's Championship, the first major football tournament Iceland ever took part in, having previously competed in the 1995 UEFA Women's Championship which was a home and away knockout competition. At the 2013 UEFA Women's Championship, they took their first point in a major championship, following a draw against Norway in the opening game.
The Icelandic Men's Hockey League, also known as Hertz deild karla for sponsorship reasons, is an ice hockey league in Iceland. As of the 2017–2018 season, it has four active teams. Its current champion is Skautafélag Akureyrar. It is run by Ice Hockey Iceland.
The 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull were a period of volcanic events at Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland which, although relatively small for volcanic eruptions, caused enormous disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe over an initial period of six days in April 2010. Additional localised disruption continued into May 2010, and eruptive activity persisted until June 2010. The eruption was declared officially over in October 2010, after 3 months of inactivity, when snow on the glacier did not melt. From 14–20 April, ash from the volcanic eruption covered large areas of Northern Europe. About 20 countries closed their airspace to commercial jet traffic and it affected approximately 10 million travellers.

Presidential elections took place in Iceland on 25 June 2016. President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, elected in 1996, stepped down after serving five consecutive terms. The history professor Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was elected after receiving a plurality of 39.1% of the vote. He took office on 1 August, as the first new president of Iceland in twenty years.
Sigurlína (Lína) Valgerður Ingvarsdóttir is an Icelandic engineer, project manager and video games specialist. Since 2012, working in Stockholm, Sweden, for EA DICE, she has coordinated the development of Star Wars Battlefront and later of FIFA.
Helena Sverrisdóttir is an Icelandic professional basketball player for Valur of the Icelandic Úrvalsdeild kvenna. Helena has been named the Icelandic Women's Basketball Player of the Year 12 times. She has won the Icelandic championship five times and the Slovak championship two times.
The Keflavík women's basketball team, commonly known as Keflavík, is the women's basketball department of Keflavík ÍF, based in the town of Reykjanesbær in Iceland. It is Iceland's most successful women's basketball team with 16 national championship. They currently play in Úrvalsdeild kvenna where they won the national championship in 2017. The club has won the Icelandic Basketball Cup a record fifteen times, including in 2017 and 2018.
Icecon is a science fiction, fantasy, horror and comic fan convention in Reykjavík, Iceland. The first Icecon was held in 2016. Icecon is a biannual con for both Icelandic and international science fiction and fantasy fandom, and is the only literary Icelandic science fiction and fantasy convention.
Íslandsmót kvenna í íshokkí; English: Icelandic Women's Hockey League, also known as Hertz deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is an ice hockey league in Iceland. Its current champion is SA Ásynjur. It is run by Ice Hockey Iceland.
TF-SIF is an Aerospatiale SA365N Dauphin 2 helicopter used by the Icelandic Coast Guard from 1985 to 2007. It took part in several high profile rescue operations around Iceland during its 22-year career and is credited to have been involved in the rescue of around 250 lives. It is named after Sif, the golden-haired goddess from Norse mythology and is the third Coast Guard aircraft to bear the name.
The Valur men's football team, commonly known as Valur, is the men's football department of the Knattspyrnufélagið Valur multi-sport club. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland, and currently plays in the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top-tier men's football league in Iceland. The team plays it home games at Hlíðarendi located in Reykjavík. The team's colors are red and white.
Valgerður Hafstað was an Icelandic painter who worked with acrylic, oil and watercolours. She was educated at the Academy of Free and Mercantile Art in Copenhagen, the School of Arts and Crafts in Reykjavík and Paris' Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Valgerður worked on mineral windows and mosaics and produced several privately owned paintings.
