The recorded history of Iceland began with the settlement by Viking explorers and the people they enslaved from the east, particularly Norway and the British Isles, in the late ninth century. Iceland was still uninhabited long after the rest of Western Europe had been settled. Recorded settlement has conventionally been dated back to 874, although archaeological evidence indicates Gaelic monks from Ireland, known as papar according to sagas, had settled Iceland before that date.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær KSO is a Norwegian professional football manager and former player who is the manager of Premier League club Manchester United.
Norman Julius "Boomer" Esiason is a former American football quarterback and sports analyst who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons, primarily with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was selected by the Bengals in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft, where he spent 10 nonconsecutive seasons. Esiason was also a member of the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals. To date, he is the last Bengals quarterback to lead the franchise to victory in the playoffs, doing so in 1990.
Nils Gunnar Nordahl was a Swedish football player. A highly prolific, powerful, and physically strong striker, with an eye for goal, he is best known for his spell at A.C. Milan from 1949 to 1956, in which he won the Scudetto twice, and also the title of pluricapocannoniere, with an unprecedented five top scorer (Capocannonieri) awards, more than any other player in the history of the Italian championship.

Manuela Ósk Harðardóttir is an Icelandic beauty queen and a model. She was crowned Miss Reykjavik and Miss Iceland in 2002. She represented her country in Miss Scandinavia and was 1st runner-up. She also went to compete in Miss Universe 2003 in Panama City. She was hospitalized two days before the pageant, due to dehydration, and could not compete.
Sigursteinn Davíð Gíslason was an Icelandic football player and manager. A left-sided defender who could also play in midfield, he spent the majority of his playing career in his home country; he started his career with KR and later had spells with ÍA and Víkingur Reykjavík. During the 1999–2000 season, Sigursteinn joined English club Stoke City and played eight matches in the Football League. Following his retirement from playing, he became a coach at his former club KR and went on to spend three years as the club's assistant manager. In 2008, Sigursteinn was appointed as manager of Leiknir Reykjavík, a position he held for more than two seasons before being forced to retire through illness.

Guðmundur Steinsson is an Icelandic former professional footballer who played as a forward. He made 19 appearances scoring 8 goals for the Iceland national football team. At club level he played for Knattspyrnufélagið Fram competing in the 1981–82 European Cup Winners' Cup and was the topscorer of the 1984 Úrvalsdeild with 10 goals. With Víkingur he became topscorer of the 1991 Úrvalsdeild with 13 goals. He played for Víkingur also in the 1992–93 UEFA Champions League and scored in a match against CSKA Moscow.

The 2017 Úrvalsdeild karla, also known as Pepsi-deild karla for sponsorship reasons, was the 106th season of top-flight Icelandic football. Twelve teams contested the league, including the defending champions FH, who won their eighth league title in 2016.
