Icelandic names are names used by people from Iceland. Icelandic surnames are different from most other naming systems in the modern Western world by being patronymic or occasionally matronymic: they indicate the father of the child and not the historic family lineage. Iceland shares a common cultural heritage with the Nordic countries of Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Unlike other Nordics, Icelanders have continued to use their traditional name system, which was formerly used by all Nordic countries. The Icelandic system is thus not based on family names. Generally, with few exceptions, a person's last name indicates the first name of their father (patronymic) or in some cases mother (matronymic) in the genitive, followed by -son ("son") or -dóttir ("daughter").
The Iceland men's national basketball team represents Iceland in international basketball tournaments. The team is controlled by the Icelandic Basketball Association.
The KR men's basketball team, commonly known as KR or KR Basket, is a professional basketball club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the men's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur multi-sport club. It has won the Icelandic championship eighteen times, the most national championships in the men's top-tier league history. It won a record 6 national champions in a row from 2014 to 2019. In 2017 the club played in FIBA Europe Cup for the first time since 2008. In March 2023, the team was relegated to the second-tier 1. deild karla for the first time in its history.
Aron Einar Malmquist Gunnarsson is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays for Qatar Stars League club Al-Arabi and captains the Icelandic national team. He plays as a central midfielder, usually in a defensive capacity.
Jón Sigurðsson was an Icelandic politician. He was brought in as Minister of Industry and Commerce for the Progressive Party when Halldór Ásgrímsson abandoned politics. He was later elected party chairman from 2006 to 2007 but resigned after he failed to win a seat in the Althing. Prior to that, he had been governor of the Central Bank of Iceland from 2003 to 2006.
Ólafur Þór Gunnarsson is a Icelandic former footballer. He played the majority of his career in Iceland and capped for the Icelandic national team against Brazil in 2002. He played football for Flagler College in the United States, where he was a three-time NAIA All-American, All-Region XIV and All-Florida Sun Conference selection. In 2016, he was inducted into the schools hall of fame.
Southwest is one of the six multi-member constituencies of the Althing, the national legislature of Iceland. The constituency was established as Reykjanes in 1959 following the nationwide extension of proportional representation for elections to the Althing. It was renamed Southwest in 2003 when the Reykjanes area of constituency was merged into the Southern constituency following the re-organisation of constituencies across Iceland. Southwest is conterminous with the Capital region but excludes Reykjavík Municipality which has its own constituencies. The constituency currently elects 11 of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2021 parliamentary election it had 73,699 registered electors.
Jón Gunnarsson is an Icelandic politician who has been the minister of justice of Iceland since 1 February 2022. He served as minister of the interior from 2021 to 2022 and as minister of transport and local government in 2017.
