Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic, with a population of 348,580 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík, with Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country being home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, with most of the archipelago having a tundra climate.

1952 Icelandic presidential election

Presidential elections were held for the first time in Iceland on 29 June 1952 following the death of incumbent President Sveinn Björnsson. The result was a victory for Ásgeir Ásgeirsson, who received 48.3% of the vote, resulting in the first contested election in the history of Iceland.

Georgia Björnsson was the wife of the first Icelandic President Sveinn Björnsson and was the First Lady of Iceland from 1944 to 1952. Björnsson was born in Denmark to Danish parents.

Axel Sveinsson was a civil engineer, having received his engineering degree in Copenhagen in 1927. He is noted for having designed several remarkable lighthouses in Iceland; these include the lighthouses at Hólmsbergsviti, Gardskagi, Þrídrangaviti and Knarraros. A postage stamp depicting the Vattarnes lighthouse at Reyðarfjörður, which was designed by Axel, was issued in 2013.

Georgía Olga Kristiansen is an Icelandic basketball referee and a former player. She was the first female referee to officiate in the highest competitive tier men's basketball league in Iceland, Úrvalsdeild karla, and the second female referee to officiate in the top-tier Icelandic women's basketball league, Úrvalsdeild kvenna, after Indíana Sólveig Marquez. Georgía and Indíana were also the first female referee pair to officiate together a highest competitive tier game in Iceland.
