Birger is a Scandinavian name from Old Norse, bjarga, meaning "to help, to save, to protect". It is widely used in Norway as Birger but also as Børge. The Swedish variant of Birger would soon evolve into Börje, however, the prior form would remain common, and were not be confused with its successor. The Icelandic form is Birgir. Birger is primarily a masculine given name, but can also be found as a surname.

The KR men's basketball team, commonly known as KR or KR Basket, is a professional basketball club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the men's basketball department of Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur multi-sport club. It has won the Icelandic championship eighteen times, the most national championships in the men's top-tier league history. It won a record 6 national champions in a row from 2014 to 2019. In 2017 the club played in FIBA Europe Cup for the first time since 2008. In March 2023, the team was relegated to the second-tier 1. deild karla for the first time in its history.
Hólmfríður "Fríða" Magnúsdóttir is an Icelandic former footballer who played as a left winger or as an attacking midfielder. Hólmfríður was a part of Iceland's national team from 2003 to 2020 and represented her country at the 2009 and 2013 editions of the UEFA Women's Championship.
Ryan Anthony Amoroso is an American basketball player who last played for Comunicaciones Mercedes in the Argentinian Torneo Nacional de Ascenso. He was the starting power forward for the Aztecs of San Diego State University.

The constituency was established in 2003 when the existing Reykjavík constituency was split into two. The constituency currently elects nine of the 63 members of the Althing using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2021 parliamentary election it had 45,361 registered electors.

Benedikt Rúnar Guðmundsson is an Icelandic professional basketball coach for Úrvalsdeild karla club Njarðvík and the Icelandic women's national basketball team. He has been named Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year twice: in the 2006–07 season and in the 2008–09 season,. In both seasons, he won the Icelandic men's championship KR. He has been named the Úrvalsdeild kvenna Coach of the year twice; in 2010, when he also won the Icelandic women's championship with KR, and in 2019.
Helgi Jónas Guðfinnsson is an Icelandic basketball coach and former professional player. He spent the majority of his career with Grindavík where he won the Icelandic championship in 1996 and the Icelandic Cup in 1995, 1998 and 2006. He was twice named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year and once the Icelandic Basketball Men's Player of the Year. After his playing career came to an end, Helgi went into coaching and led Grindavík to the Icelandic Cup in 2011 and the national championship in 2012.
Birgir Ísleifur Gunnarsson was an Icelandic politician and lawyer. He was the governor of the Central Bank of Iceland from 1991 to 2005.
Finnur Freyr Stefánsson is an Icelandic professional basketball coach. With KR, he won the Icelandic championship five years in a row from 2014 to 2018 and the Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup in 2016 and 2017. He has served as an assistant coach to the Icelandic men's national basketball team from 2014, helping the team to EuroBasket 2015 and EuroBasket 2017.
The Úrvalsdeild Karla Player of the Year is an award for the top-tier basketball league in Iceland, the men's Úrvalsdeild. It was first awarded in 1968, to Birgir Örn Birgis, and the first trophy was given by Dave Zinkoff of the Philadelphia 76ers. From 1979, the award has been given to both the domestic and foreign player of the year.
The Men's Coach of the Year is an award for the top-tier basketball league in Iceland, the men's Úrvalsdeild.
The Skallagrímur men's basketball team, commonly known as Skallagrímur, is the men's basketball department of Ungmennafélagið Skallagrímur, based in Borgarnes, Iceland.
The Iceland men's national under-20 basketball team is the national representative for Iceland in men's international under-20 basketball tournaments. They are organized and run by the Icelandic Basketball Association. The team competes at the FIBA U20 European Championship.
Hrefna Huld Jóhannesdóttir is an Icelandic former footballer who played as a striker. She spent most of her career with KR and scored 179 goals in 220 Úrvalsdeild kvenna matches. In 2003, she won the Úrvalsdeild kvenna golden boot after scoring 21 goals in 14 matches. She played college football for Auburn Montgomery, and was named to the 2004 NAIA Women's Soccer All-American second team. From 2000 to 2005, she made ten appearances for the Iceland women's national football team. Hrefna retired from football in 2012 due to mental health issues.
Garðar Örn Hinriksson is an Icelandic former football referee. He was a FIFA listed referee from 2004 to 2009. He was named the Úrvalsdeild karla Referee of the Year in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
The 2018–19 Úrvalsdeild karla was the 68th season of the Úrvalsdeild karla, the top tier men's basketball league in Iceland. The season started on 4 October 2018 and ended on 4 May 2019. KR won its sixth title in a row by defeating ÍR 3–2 in the Finals.
Hvíti Riddarinn is a multi-sport club based in Mosfellsbær, Iceland. It was founded on 14 August 1998 and through its history has fielded departments in football, handball and basketball.
