General elections were held in Costa Rica on 4 October 1949. [1] They followed the introduction of a new constitution after the Costa Rican Civil War. Voters elected a Vice-President (as none had been chosen in the 1948 elections) and the Legislative Assembly. The result was a victory for the National Unity Party, which received 72% of the vote. Voter turnout was 44% in the vice-presidential election and 49% in the parliamentary election. [2]

Presidential elections were held in São Tomé and Príncipe on 30 June 1996. The election was contested by four candidates; incumbent President Miguel Trovoada, former President Manuel Pinto da Costa, Alda Bandeira, a former Foreign Minister, and former Prime Minister Carlos da Graça. No candidate won a majority of votes in the first round, in which voter turnout in the first round was 77.3%, resulting in a second round being held on 21 July between the two leading candidates - Trovoada and da Costa. Trovoada won the election with 52.7% of the vote, based on a 78.7% turnout.
Mid-term parliamentary elections were held in Costa Rica on 5 December 1915. The result was a victory for the Republican Party, which received almost two-thirds of the vote. Voter turnout was 50%.

General elections were held in Costa Rica on 3 February 2002. For the first time in the country's history, no candidate in the presidential election passed the 40% threshold. This meant a second round of voting had to be held on 7 April which saw Abel Pacheco of the Social Christian Unity Party defeat the National Liberation Party's Rolando Araya Monge.
Presidential elections were held in Cyprus for the first time on 13 December 1959. Only two candidates contested the election; Makarios III, who was backed by EOKA, and Ioannis Clerides, a member of the Democratic Union who was also supported by AKEL. The result was a victory for Makarios III, who received 67% of the vote, although he did not take office until 16 August 1960. Voter turnout was 91.2%.
