A presidential election was held in the Socialist Republic of Romania on 28 March 1980.
Nicolae Ceaușescu was re-elected by the Great National Assembly as the President of Romania during its meeting of 28 March 1980; [1] he was the only candidate.

Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe. It borders Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. It has a mainly continental climate, and an area of 238,397 km2 (92,046 sq mi) with a population of 19 million people. Romania is the twelfth-largest country in Europe and the sixth-most populous member state of the European Union. Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, empties into the Danube Delta in the southeast of the country. The Carpathian Mountains cross Romania from the north to the southwest and include Moldoveanu Peak, at an altitude of 2,544 m (8,346 ft). Bucharest is the country's largest urban area and economic hub. Other major urban centres include Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Constanța and Brașov.
Carol II was King of Romania from 8 June 1930, until his forced abdication on 6 September 1940. As the eldest son of King Ferdinand I, he became crown prince upon the death of his grand-uncle, King Carol I, in 1914. He was the first of the Hohenzollern kings of Romania to be born in the country, as both of his predecessors had been born in Germany and came to Romania only as adults. As such, he was the first member of the Romanian branch of the Hohenzollerns who spoke Romanian as his first language and was also the first member of his royal family to be raised in the Orthodox faith.
Nicolae Ceaușescu was a Romanian politician who was the second and last communist leader of Romania, serving as the general secretary of the Romanian Communist Party from 1965 to 1989. Widely classified as a dictator, he was the country's head of state from 1967 to 1989, serving as President of the State Council from 1967 and as the first President of the Republic from 1974. He was overthrown and executed in the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 along with his wife Elena Ceaușescu, as part of a series of anti-communist uprisings in Eastern Europe that year.

In addition, both Comăneci and Conner are highly involved with the Special Olympics.

Costică Ștefănescu was a Romanian football player and coach who last managed Qatari side Al Shamal. He spent the majority of his career at FC Universitatea Craiova, where he made a club-record 378 appearances. He is also the second all-time appearance leader in Liga I, having played in 490 matches. In 1983, Ștefănescu was nominated for the Ballon d'Or. He played for the Romania national team from 1977 to 1985, and was capped 66 times. In August 2013, after suffering from cancer for a long time, he committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of the military hospital in Bucharest.
Nicolae Negrilă is a Romanian former professional footballer who played for Universitatea Craiova. He earned 28 caps for the Romania national football team, and participated in UEFA Euro 1984.
The 1980 Romania rugby union tour of Ireland was a series of six matches played by the Romania national rugby union team in Ireland and England in October 1980. The tour was essentially a visit to Ireland, with a single match against Leicester being played in England. Romania won four of their six matches, lost one and drew the other. The draw came in the international match against Ireland, which the home team did not consider a full international match. This was rated a major result for Romania, who were hopeful at the time of joining the Five Nations Championship, and the Rothmans Rugby Yearbook's review of the tour stated that "any lingering doubts about the ability of the Romanians to pose a challenge to the home countries were dispelled".
U Craiova 1948 Club Sportiv, commonly known as Universitatea Craiova, CS U Craiova, or simply U Craiova, is a Romanian professional football team based in Craiova, Dolj County. It competes in the Liga I, the top tier of the Romanian league system.
The 1980–81 Balkans Cup was an edition of the Balkans Cup, a football competition for representative clubs from the Balkan states. It was contested by 6 teams and Velež Mostar won the trophy.
