The race was won by Robert Sangster's Golden Fleece, at odds of 3/1 ridden by jockey Pat Eddery and trained at Ballydoyle by Vincent O'Brien. Golden Fleece's win was the sixth in the race for O'Brien and the second for Eddery. The winning time of 2:34.27 was the fastest since Mahmoud's hand-timed 2:33.8 in 1936.

Golden Fleece was an American-bred, Irish-trained champion Thoroughbred race horse. In a career which consisted of only four races, he was undefeated, with his most notable success coming on his final racecourse appearance in the 1982 Epsom Derby. In that race he recorded the fastest winning time since before WWII. Sent to stud, the horse contracted stomach cancer and died in March 1984 after only one year's stud duty.

Assert was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old he was beaten by Golden Fleece on his debut but went on to win the Beresford Stakes. In the following year he won four Group One races: the French Derby, Irish Derby, Benson & Hedges Gold Cup and Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. He was rated the best middle-distance horse in Europe in 1982 by Timeform. He was retired to stud at the end of his three-year-old season and became a successful sire of winners.

Touching Wood (1979–2004) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1982. Touching Wood was still a maiden when he finished second to Golden Fleece in the 1982 Epsom Derby. In the autumn of 1982 he became the first horse in 53 years to win both the St Leger Stakes and the Irish St. Leger and was the first classic winner owned by a member of the Maktoum family. He was retired to stud and had some success as a sire of winners before his death in New Zealand in 2004.

English Prince (1971–1983) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted four months in the spring and summer of 1974 he ran six times and won four races. After being beaten on his racecourse debut he won the White Rose Stakes, Predominate Stakes and King Edward VII Stakes in England before recording his most important success in the Irish Derby. He suffered from a series of training problems thereafter, was beaten by Bustino in his only subsequent race and was retired from racing at the end of the year. He sired the dual classic winner Sun Princess before being exported to Japan where he died in 1983.

Count Pahlen was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1981 he was one of the best colts of his generation in Europe, winning two of his five races including a victory over a strong field in the Group One William Hill Futurity. He won the Blue Riband Trial Stakes on his three-year-old debut, but his form deteriorated thereafter. He raced in North America in 1883 and 1984 but had very little success, winning one minor race from twenty-four attempts. He later stood as a breeding stallion in France but had no success as a sire of winners.

The 1984 Epsom Derby was the 205th annual running of the Derby horse race. It took place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 6 June 1984. It was the first edition of the race to be commercially sponsored and was known as the Ever Ready Derby. The sponsorship meant that the first prize of £227,680 was the biggest in the history of the race.
