It was won by German side Schalke 04, who beat Internazionale of Italy on penalties after the two-legged final finished 1–1 on aggregate. Defending champions Bayern Munich were eliminated in the first round by Valencia.
The 1994–95 UEFA Cup was won by Parma on aggregate over Juventus. Internazionale were the defending champions with a wild card, but were knocked out in the first round by Aston Villa.

The six teams in this group played against each other on a home-and-away basis. The group winner Sweden qualified for the 17th FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. The runner-up Turkey advanced to the UEFA Play-off and played against Austria. Sweden went undefeated through the group, conceding just two draws against Turkey and Slovakia: Turkey and Slovakia ran close for second, the positions eventually being decided by Turkey's victory in the second match between the two sides, which ensured that even their subsequent defeat to the Swedes could not keep them out of second place.

The runner-up Romania advanced to the UEFA Play-off and played against Slovenia. Italy conceded two unexpected draws against the lowest-ranked sides in the group, but won the big matches comfortably, and were established as group winners long before the end of the campaign. Romania lost both games against Italy but had five wins out of six in the other matches, and second place was likewise ensured early.
