Serena Williams and Venus Williams were the defending champions from 2010; however, they were unable to defend their title because of Serena's foot injury, sustained in the middle of the 2010 season. [1]

Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta won the title beating Victoria Azarenka and Maria Kirilenko 26, 75, 61 in the final. This was to be Dulko and Pennetta's only Grand Slam doubles title.

Amélie Mauresmo defeated Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 6–1, 2–0 ret., to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2006 Australian Open. Henin was suffering from stomach cramps resulting from the accidental misuse of anti-inflammatories for a chronic shoulder injury.
