American Le Mans Series (ALMS) president Scott Atherton confirmed the race was part of the schedule for the 2013 American Le Mans Series schedule in October 2012. [1] It was the second consecutive year the event was held as part of the American Le Mans Series. The 2013 American Le Mans Series VIR 240 was the ninth of ten scheduled sports car races of 2013 American Le Mans Series. The race was held at the seventeen-turn 3.270 mi (5.263 km) Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia on October 5, 2013. [2]

Virginia International Raceway (VIR) is a race track located in Alton, Virginia, near Danville. It is less than a half-mile from the North Carolina/Virginia border just outside Milton, North Carolina, on the banks of the Dan River. VIR hosts amateur and professional automobile and motorcycle events, driving schools, club days, and private test rentals.
The 2012 American Le Mans Series season was a multi-event auto racing championship for sports racing cars which conform to the technical regulations laid out by the International Motor Sports Association for the American Le Mans Series. It was the fourteenth season of the American Le Mans Series, and the 42nd season overall of the IMSA GT Championship. The season began with the 60th annual 12 Hours of Sebring on March 14–17, and covered ten events.
The GT Challenge at VIR is a sports car race held at the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, since 1957. After being a part of the SCCA National Sports Car Championship and the IMSA GT Championship the race, along with the track, went on hiatus from the early 1970s until 2002. It returned as a round of the Rolex Sports Car Series, and became an American Le Mans Series race in 2012. In 2014 the race joined the schedule of the United SportsCar Championship after the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Rolex Sports Car Series.

It was a new event for the American Le Mans Series but had been held the previous ten years for the Rolex Sports Car Series. The race was held over a four-hour time period, during which 135 laps of the 3.3 kilometre "Full Course" circuit were completed for a race distance of 710 kilometres.

The 2013 Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach was an auto race held on the Long Beach road course in Long Beach, California on April 20 and 21, 2013. The seventh running of the Long Beach event for the American Le Mans Series, this was the second round of the 2013 season. The race weekend was shared with the IndyCar Series, which ran the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Germans Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr of Muscle Milk Pickett Racing won the race for the third year in succession. The PC category was led by Colin Braun and Jon Bennett of CORE Autosport, while Scott Sharp and Guy Cosmo's Extreme Speed Motorsports entry was victorious in the P2 class. The BMW Team RLL squad scored a one-two victory, led by Bill Auberlen and Maxime Martin; Henrique Cisneros, Jr. and Sean Edwards won the GTC class for NGT Motorsports.

The four-hour race was the third round of the 2013 American Le Mans Series season. Germans Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr defended their 2012 Monterey win with overall victory for Muscle Milk Pickett Racing, while Luhr became the winningest driver in American Le Mans Series history. Scott Tucker and Marino Franchitti took P2 honors for Level 5 Motorsports, while Mike Gausch and Luis Díaz won the PC category. Corvette Racing's Jan Magnussen and Antonio García led GT and Henrique Cisneros, Jr. and Nick Tandy won in GTC.
The 2013 Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix was an auto racing event held at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada from July 19–21, 2013 The race was the fifth round of the 2013 American Le Mans Series season. Muscle Milk Pickett Racing, with drivers Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr, extended their streak of season victories to four by earning a win with a four lap gap over second place and P2 class winners Level 5 Motorsports. CORE Autosport led the PC category, while Corvette Racing scored their third victory of the season in the GT class. Alex Job Racing won the GTC category, two weeks after badly damaging their car at the previous event in Lime Rock.
The 16th Annual Petit Le Mans presented by Mazda was the 2013 edition of the Petit Le Mans automotive endurance race, held on October 16–19, 2013, at the Road Atlanta circuit in Braselton, Georgia, United States. The 1,000 miles (1,600 km) race was the final Round of the 2013 American Le Mans Series season, as well as the final event of the American Le Mans Series as a whole before the series is reborn as the United SportsCar Championship in 2014. Rebellion Racing's Nick Heidfeld, Nicolas Prost, and Neel Jani won the team's second consecutive Petit Le Mans, a full six laps ahead of the P2 class winning Level 5 Motorsports Honda, who secured a championship for Scott Tucker with the victory. The BAR1 Motorsports won the Prototype Challenge category, their third straight victory of the season. Team Falken Tire Porsche held the GT class lead by less than a second at the finish, while Flying Lizard Motorsports won the GT Challenge category by a margin of six seconds.
The 2019 Michelin GT Challenge at VIR was a sports car race sanctioned by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA). The race was held at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, on August 25, 2019. The race was the tenth round of the 2019 IMSA SportsCar Championship, and the sixth round of the WeatherTech Sprint Cup. Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet won the race overall in the #911 Porsche GT Team Porsche 911 RSR leading home a 1-2 for Porsche who clinched the GTLM manufactures championship. In GTD, the #33 Mercedes-AMG Team Riley Motorsports of Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen took their first win of the season.
