Before September, the Braves had two winning months and three non-winning months that they played, [1] and briefly reached first place in their division. The team's performance declined in September, as the team lost 16 out of the first 20 games they played that month. They finished tied in second place with a 79–83 record, 17 games back in second place in the division, and failed to make the playoffs.

The 2007 Kansas City Royals season was the 39th season for the franchise, and their 37th at Kauffman Stadium. the season began with the team attempting to win the American League Central - a task not achieved since the division was formed in 1994.
The 1983 Toronto Blue Jays season was the franchise's seventh season of Major League Baseball. For the first time in team history, Toronto avoided a last place finish in their division and recorded a winning record. The Blue Jays finishing fourth in the American League East with a record of 89 wins and 73 losses, starting a streak of 11 consecutive winning seasons. It was the team's first season to use the song "OK Blue Jays" in the seventh-inning stretch.
The 1996 Los Angeles Dodgers season was the 107th for the franchise in Major League Baseball, and their 39th season in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers were atop the standings for a substantial part of the season, albeit under two managers. Longtime manager Tommy Lasorda suffered a heart attack in late June and had to step down. Bill Russell, Lasorda's bench coach and a former Dodger player, was chosen to manage the rest of the season.
The 1991 Atlanta Braves season was the 26th in Atlanta and the 121st overall. They became the first team in the National League to go from last place one year to first place the next, doing so after remaining 9.5 games out of first at the All Star break. Coincidentally, the Braves' last-to-first feat was also accomplished by the 1991 Minnesota Twins, the team they would face in the 1991 World Series. The last Major League Baseball team to accomplish this was the 1890 Louisville Colonels of the American Association. The 1991 World Series, which the Braves ultimately lost, has been called the greatest World Series in history by ESPN.

The team finished the strike-shortened season with a record of 90–54, the best in the National League, en route to winning the World Series. For the sixth straight season, the team was managed by Bobby Cox.
The 2006 Houston Astros season was the 45th season for the Houston Astros. The 2006 Astros finished in second place in the National League Central with a record of 82–80, 1½ games behind the eventual World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, after losing 3–1 to the Braves at Atlanta on the final day of the season. The Giants set a Major League record which still stands for the most double plays grounded into by a team in a single game, with 7 against the Houston Astros on May 4.

It was the first time since 2010 that the Astros did not finish in last place for their division, and featured the best overall season record since that season as well.

The 2014 New York Mets season, was the 53rd season of the franchise. It was also their sixth season at Citi Field. The Mets finished 79–83, their most wins since the 2010 season. Also, the Mets finished tied for second place in the National League East, their highest place in the standings since 2008. On July 8, the Mets won 8-3 over the Atlanta Braves to celebrate their 4,000th win in team history.

It was the first year under new manager Rocco Baldelli who was hired on October 25, 2018 following the firing of previous manager Paul Molitor on October 2. It was also the first season since 2004 without longtime Twin Joe Mauer on the roster, as he announced his retirement on November 9, 2018 after 15 seasons. His number 7 was retired on June 15, 2019.

The Braves were managed by Brian Snitker, in his sixth season as the team’s manager. The Braves clinched their fourth consecutive National League East title. They defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS and faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS for the second straight year. They defeated the Dodgers in six games to reach the World Series for the first time since 1999. They would go on to defeat the Houston Astros in six games, winning their first World Series since 1995, their second since moving to Atlanta, and their fourth in franchise history. Jorge Soler won the Most Valuable Player award in the World Series.
