The 2015 San Marino and Rimini's Coast motorcycle Grand Prix was the thirteenth round of the 2015 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It was held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in Misano Adriatico on 13 September 2015. [4]
The Misano World Circuit, also known as Marco Simoncelli Circuit is a race track located next to the town of Misano Adriatico in the frazione of Santa Monica. Originally designed in 1969 as a length of 3.488 kilometres (2.17 mi), it hosted its first event in 1972. In 1993, the track length was increased to 4.064 kilometres (2.53 mi).
Misano Adriatico is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Rimini in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) southeast of Bologna and about 14 kilometres (9 mi) southeast of Rimini.
The MotoGP race started in dry conditions but as the race progressed, rain started to fall, forcing most of the riders to change to bikes with wet tyres. The rain eventually stopped halfway through the race and the final laps were completed in relatively dry track conditions. Factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo took his third pole position of the season but it was Marc Márquez who won the race after making a crucial second bike change before Valentino Rossi and Lorenzo. [5] Bradley Smith and Scott Redding became the first pair of British riders to stand on a premier class podium since Barry Sheene and Tom Herron at the 1979 Venezuelan Grand Prix. [6] Smith made a risky yet successful decision to stay on dry tyres for the whole duration of the race and achieved his second premier class podium in second place, while Redding achieved his maiden MotoGP podium with a third-place finish despite crashing earlier in the race. [7]
Yamaha Motor Racing or Yamaha Factory Racing is the official Italian-Japanese factory team of Yamaha in MotoGP.
Jorge Lorenzo Guerrero is a professional Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He is the 2006 and 2007 250cc World Champion, and the 2010, 2012 and 2015 MotoGP World Champion. He currently competes in the MotoGP class, riding for Honda. He rode for Yamaha from 2008 to 2016 and Ducati from 2017 to 2018. On 6 June 2018 it was announced Lorenzo would be joining the Repsol Honda team for the 2019 and 2020 MotoGP seasons. Apart from his three titles in the premier class, Lorenzo has also finished as runner-up on three occasions. In 2012, Lorenzo became the first Spanish rider to win multiple premier class titles, and with 67 career wins, he is sixth on the all-time wins list.
Marc Márquez Alentà is a Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time with seven Grand Prix world championships to his name - five of which are in the premier MotoGP class. Márquez races for Honda's factory team since his MotoGP debut in 2013. He is nicknamed the 'Ant of Cervera' worldwide and 'el tro de Cervera' in his hometown, meaning the 'Thunder of Cervera'. He is one of four riders to have won world championship titles in three different categories, after Mike Hailwood, Phil Read and Valentino Rossi. Marquez is often considered one of the greatest innovators of modern MotoGP racing, due to his comparatively exaggerated cornering technique of leaning so far over the bike he seems to be “in constant danger of sliding out”.
Lorenzo and Rossi stayed out on wet tyres for a few laps longer than Márquez; this resulted in a fifth-place finish for Rossi and Lorenzo crashed out with eight laps remaining. [8] Yonny Hernández and Alex de Angelis also crashed out while Pol Espargaró and wildcard Michele Pirro both retired. Loris Baz took his fourth victory in the Open category with a fourth-place finish. Although Rossi only managed to finish in fifth position, Lorenzo's retirement extended the championship gap between the two riders to 23 points. [9]
Yonny Hernández Vega is a Colombian motorcycle racer. He is the older brother of Santiago Hernández.
Alex de Angelis is a motorcycle road racer from San Marino.
Pol Espargaró Villà is a Spanish Grand Prix motorcycle racer who currently rides in the MotoGP class for the KTM factory team. Pol is the younger brother of Aleix Espargaró, and is best known for winning the 2013 Moto2 World Championship. He won the Suzuka 8 Hours in 2015 with Bradley Smith and Katsuyuki Nakasuga, and in 2016 with Nakasuga and Alex Lowes. He is the first rider to finish on the podium riding a KTM motorcycle in MotoGP.
In the junior classes, both pole-sitters won their respective races; Johann Zarco won his sixth race of the season in Moto2, while Enea Bastianini took his first Grand Prix victory in Moto3 after a final-lap pass on Miguel Oliveira. [10]
Johann Zarco is a Grand Prix motorcycle racer from France, best known for winning the 2015 and 2016 Moto2 World Championships.
Enea Bastianini is an Italian Grand Prix motorcycle racer.
