General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 22 September 2016. [1] Independents won 21 of the 24 seats in the House of Keys. A record number of women were elected (5, or 21% of the House). [2]

Electoral system

Following changes to the electoral system ahead of the elections, the 24 members of the House of Keys were elected from 12 constituencies, each of which returned 2 members. Previously constituencies had varied in size from one to three seats. [3] Election is by multiple non-transferable vote in each constituency, with voters having two votes (of which they may choose to use only one) for the two seats.

The government of the Isle of Man is a parliamentary representative democracy. The Monarch of the United Kingdom is also the head of state of the Isle of Man, and generally referred to as "The King, Lord of Mann". The Isle of Man partially elects its legislature at the national level. The High Court of Tynwald consists of two chambers. The House of Keys has 24 members, elected in a general election for a five-year term in 12 two-seat constituencies. Each voter has two votes and in each constituency the two candidates with the most votes are elected. The Legislative Council has 11 members: three ex-officio members and eight other members who are elected by the House of Keys for a five-year term. Political parties do not play an important role on the Island. The Isle of Man lowered its voting age from 18 to 16 in 2006.

Peter Karran is a Manx politician, who is a former leader of the Liberal Vannin Party and former Minister of Education and Children. He was a Member of the House of Keys for Middle, and then for Onchan, from 1985 to 2016.

The Liberal Vannin Party is a political party in the Isle of Man. It was founded in 2006 by Peter Karran, then an Independent MHK for Onchan. Karran had been, until 2004, a member of the Manx Labour Party. The "Vannin" in the party name is a form of the name of the Isle of Man in the native Manx Gaelic language, while "Liberal" is a reference to the general political position of the party. The party is currently led by Lawrie Hooper MHK.

Alexander John Allinson is an English-born Manx physician and politician who serves as an independent member of the House of Keys, representing Ramsey since 2016. Allinson serves on the Council of Ministers as the current Minister for the Treasury, having been appointed to the role in May 2022 by Alfred Cannan, the chief minister of the Isle of Man.
