Alexander John Allinson (born 1966) is an English-born Manx physician and politician who serves as an independent member of the House of Keys,representing Ramsey since 2016. Allinson serves on the Council of Ministers as the current Minister for the Treasury,having been appointed to the role in May 2022 by Alfred Cannan,the chief minister of the Isle of Man.
Allinson was born in London in 1966. He attended from the Latymer Upper School,and studied medicine at King's College,Cambridge,graduating with a master's degree in 1991. After graduating from medical school,Allinson worked at Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne,Australia for a year before returning to England,becoming a pediatrician in Hackney. After qualifying as a General Practitioner he later moved back to Australia,and spent over two years in Geraldton,where he worked with the Aboriginal Medical Service. He returned to England,becoming a locum tenens physician in London. In 2002,Allinson became a general practitioner in the town of Ramsey on the Isle of Man. [1]
From 2008 until 2016,Allinson had been a member of the Ramsey board of commissioners. [2]
In the 2016 Manx general election,Allinson successfully stood for the House of Keys in Ramsey as an independent candidate,receiving 47% of the vote. [3] He served in various positions in the House,including as the chair of the Manx Utilities Authority. In 2020,Allinson was appointed to the Council of Ministers as the Minister for Education,Sport and Culture by Chief Minister Howard Quayle. [2] [4]
Allinson sought re-election to the House of Keys in the 2021 Manx general election,and was re-elected with 25% of the vote. [5] Allinson ran for Chief Minister following the election;he was defeated by Alfred Cannan,having received the votes of 8 MHKs compared to Cannan's 14. [6] However,Cannan retained Allinson in the Council of Ministers and appointed him Minister for Enterprise. In this role,Allinson was in charge of much of the economy of the Isle of Man. [7]
In May 2022,Allinson was appointed Minister for the Treasury following the resignation of David Ashford. [8] [9]
Allinson has been described as a progressive reformer. [4] In 2019,he led a successful legislative effort to legalize abortion on the Isle of Man. [7] A supporter of efforts to counter climate change,Allinson helped create and fund a carbon offset plan for the 2022 Isle of Man TT. [10] Allinson is also a proponent for assisted suicide for terminally-ill patients,having introduced two motions into the House of Keys regarding the matter. [11] [12] During his campaign for chief minister,Allinson outlined several other policies he would support,including affordable housing,further restriction on zero-hour contracts,and the decriminalisation of cannabis. As head of state,Charles III holds the title Lord of Mann and is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The government of the United Kingdom is responsible for the isle's military defence and represents it abroad.
Ramsey is a coastal town in the north of the Isle of Man. It is the second largest town on the island after Douglas. Its population is 7,845 according to the 2016 Census. It has one of the biggest harbours on the island,and has a prominent derelict pier,called the Queen's Pier. It was formerly one of the main points of communication with Scotland. Ramsey has also been a route for several invasions by the Vikings and Scots.

Allan Robert Bell is a Manx politician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man,having been elected to that position on 11 October 2011. He was an Independent Member of the House of Keys for Ramsey from 1984 to September 2016,and served in several different ministerial roles. He was replaced as Chief Minister on 4 October 2016.

John David Qualtrough Cannan was the Member of the House of Keys for Michael and Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority. He was the son of former Chaplain of the House of Keys,Rev Canon Charles Cannan. He was educated at King William's College and was a businessman in the tea and rubber industry before going into politics. In the 1970s he was a Conservative Party councillor in England before returning to the Isle of Man and becoming the Michael MHK in 1982. He was elected Speaker of the House of Keys in 2000,and remained as such until the 2001 General Election. He retired from the House of Keys at the 2011 General Election.
Lieutenant Colonel Edgar John Mann MB was a British politician,and Chairman of the Executive Council of the Isle of Man,the then head of the island's Government.
The Treasury of the Isle of Man is the finance department of the Isle of Man Government. It prepares the annual budget for the Government,and also handles taxation,customs and excise,economic affairs,information systems,internal audit,currency and the census in the Isle of Man.
Geoffrey Boot is an English-born politician who until 2021 served as a Member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba and Peel. Before moving to the Isle of Man,Boot also served as a Conservative Councillor and Mayor for Sandgate in Kent.
Alfred Louis Cannan MHK is an independent Member of the House of Keys for Ayre &Michael and is the current Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. He was previously the Minister for the Treasury.
Robert Howard Quayle is the former chief minister for the Isle of Man,between 4 October 2016 and 12 October 2021. He previously served as the minister for Health and Social Care,until the elections in September 2016.
Jane Pearl Poole-Wilson,MHK is a Manx politician and solicitor. She was elected to the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man in 2017 to fill a casual vacancy and was re-elected for a full five-year term in 2018. However she was elected to the House of Keys for the constituency of Middle in the 2021 Manx general election and thus forfeited her seat on the Legislative Council. She was immediately appointed by new Chief Minister Alfred Cannan as Minister for Justice and Home Affairs. She was also appointed as Deputy Chief Minister.
Kate Lord-Brennan is a Manx politician who has been a member of the House of Keys for the constituency of Glenfaba &Peel since the 2021 Manx general election. Prior to September 2021,Lord-Brennan served as a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man,having been elected in March 2018.
The Isle of Man Green Party is a green political party in the Isle of Man founded in August 2016 by Andrew Langan-Newton,who still leads the party along with Deputy Leader,Lamara Craine. Success has been achieved at local authority level with the first seat won in a by-election in 2018 and today the party has 4 elected members on 4 different local authorities. The Party proposes that it provides a forum for citizens of the Isle of Man to build a movement seeking change and direction in Isle of Man politics.
General elections were held in the Isle of Man on 23 September 2021. A record ten women were elected,twice as many as the five elected at the previous election. For the first time,in two constituencies,both elected MHKs were women. Four government ministers failed to be re-elected.
