The 2016 SEABA Cup was the qualifying event in the SEABA for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge. The fifth edition of the games took place from 22 May to 28 May 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Automatically, only one spot was allotted for SEABA but due to the Philippines' runner-up finish in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship, the subzone was awarded another slot, thus SEABA had two spots which was contested by five SEABA teams.
The Philippines won their second tournament title by defeating the hosts Thailand in the championship match, 97–80. [1] However, both teams were already qualified to the main tournament as of 25 May due to their top two finish in the elimination round. [2]

The Philippines men's national basketball team, commonly known as Gilas Pilipinas, is the basketball team representing the Philippines. The team is managed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines, played on both the amateur and professional levels.
The men's national under-17 basketball team of the Philippines represents the country in junior men's under-16 and under-17 FIBA tournaments and is governed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. The team is currently being handled by Joshua Vincent Reyes.
Kiefer Isaac Crisologo Ravena is a Filipino professional basketball player for Shiga Lakes of the Japanese B.League. Ravena played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles of the UAAP during his college days. He plays the point guard position.
The 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Men was the intercontinental championship for basketball organized by FIBA Asia that served as the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain. The tournament was held from August 1–11 in Metro Manila, Philippines. Beirut, Lebanon was supposed to host the tournament but the hosting rights was given to the Philippines citing the Syrian Civil War and security concerns in the Middle East in general. This was also the last Asian Championships that served as the qualifying round for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, as a qualifying window was used starting 2019.
The 2015 FIBA Asia Championship was the 28th and last edition of the FIBA Asia Championship in men's basketball in Asia. It was organised by FIBA Asia.

The 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship was the 24th edition of the Asian Championship for Junior Men aged 18 years old and below. The tournament was held in Tehran, Iran from July 22 to 31. This will be the second time the country will host the tournament after successfully staging the 20th edition eight years ago.
The 2016 SEABA Under-18 Championship was the qualifying tournament for Southeast Asia Basketball Association at the 2016 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship. The tournament was the tenth edition and took place in Medan, Indonesia from 23 April to 28 April 2016. Due to the Philippines' top five finish at the 2014 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship, the subzone was allotted another spot to be contested, totaling to three spots for SEABA in the Asian tournament.

Qualifying for the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge is currently being held to determine the eight teams that will participate in the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge, aside from the host team Iran and 2015 FIBA Asia Championship winners China. Qualification is via FIBA Asia zone, with each zone having an automatic one berth, plus additional berths from the teams' zones of the second and third runners-up in the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship.
