The 2016 World University Handball Championship was the 23rd edition of this Handball Event organized by the FISU and it was held in the city of Antequera, Spain, from 27 June to 3 July. [1] [2]

Club Balonmano Antequera was a handball team based in Antequera, Andalusia. Its last season was 2011–12 in Liga ASOBAL finishing in 16th position at standings being consequently relegated.
División de Plata de Balonmano, is the second level handball league in Spain. It was founded in 1994 and is managed by RFEBM. From 1994 until 2008–09 season, this competition was known as División de Honor B. From 2009–10 season onwards, it's officially known as División de Plata.

It acted as American qualifying tournament for the 2017 World Women's Handball Championship. The event was originally set to be held in Toronto, Canada but the Canadian Handball Federation withdrew, citing lack of funds.
The Pan American Youth Beach Handball Championship was the official competition for men's and women's youth national beach handball teams of America. In addition to crowning the Pan American champions, the tournament also served as a qualifying tournament for the IHF Youth Beach Handball World Championship. Only two were held as in 2018, the PATHF disbanded and the tournaments were replaced with the North America & the Caribbean and South & Central American championships.
