The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".
The Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire is responsible for the organization and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 25. It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organizations and currently has 174 member associations from five continents. Between 1949 and 2011, it was based in Brussels (Belgium); it was relocated to Lausanne (Switzerland) since 2011.
National Sports Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It is used mostly for football matches and has a capacity 12,500. The Naadam festival, which celebrates Mongolian independence, is held there every July. The land owned by the stadium company is about 27 hectares, of which the stadium takes about 8 hectares of land. The National Sport Stadium in Mongolia hosted the 2016 World University Archery Championship.

The 2011 Summer Universiade, the XXVI Summer Universiade also Shenzhen 2011, was hosted in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.
Football was the optional sport at the 1979 edition. Between 1985 to 2019, football was a recognized mandatory sport. The women's football competition began in the 1993 edition as optional event. Due the creation of the FISU University Football World Cup in 2019, the sport will no longer be part of the Summer World University Games program starting at that year. With this change, the number of mandatory sports will be kept at fifteen, since the place will be occupied by badminton which after five editions as an optional sport turned a compulsory sport.
The 2017 Summer Universiade, officially known as the XXIX Summer Universiade and commonly called Taipei 2017, was an international multi-sport event that took place in Taipei, Taiwan from 19 to 30 August 2017.
The World University Cross Country Championships is an international biennial cross country running competition for student athletes, organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The 2012 edition of the competition featured 76 male and 61 female athletes from 23 countries. Over the history of the event, 64 countries have competed but only three have been present at all editions of the championships.

The women's individual recurve archery event at the 2015 Summer Universiade was held at the International Archery Center in Gwangju, South Korea from 4 July to 8 July 2015. It was the fifth time the event had been contested at the Summer Universiade and was its first appearance since the 2011 Summer Universiade, archery having not been selected as part of the sporting programme for the 2013 edition. Open to athletes aged between 17 and 28 enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate university programme, a total of fifty-eight archers from twenty-nine countries entered the competition.
Archery is an mandatory sport at the Universiade that has been contested as optional sport between 2003 and 2015, and after 2017 became a compulsory sport. Unlike the Olympic competition, both recurve and compound disciplines are competed.

The 2023 Summer Universiade, the XXXI Summer World University Games, commonly known as the Chengdu 2023 FISU World University Games, is a upcoming multi-sport event sanctioned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), scheduled to be held from 28 July to 8 August, 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. These will be the third edition of the Games to be hosted by China, and the first edition to be branded under the "Summer World University Games" title rather than "Summer Universiade".

Ukraine competed at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China, from 12 to 23 August 2011. 293 athletes formed the Ukrainian. They competed in archery, athletics, basketball, beach volleyball, chess, cycling, diving, fencing, football, gymnastics, judo, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, and weightlifting. Ukraine was not represented in badminton, golf, sailing, and water polo.
