Clout is the centre of target usually formed of a rag, sometimes of a red colour, but most usually of white. Nares is of opinion that the clout of a butt or target signified a nail, and that it was derived from the French clou, a nail, clouette, a little nail. In Gaelic, [...] clout, the Keltic clud, does not signify a nail, but a patch, a rag, a clout [...].
