The 2017 IIHF World Championship Division III was an international ice hockey tournament run by the International Ice Hockey Federation. It was contested in Sofia, Bulgaria from 10 to 16 April 2017. [1] Seven teams participated in the tournament, divided into two groups. Bosnia and Herzegovina was originally scheduled to participate, but withdrew before the tournament began; all their games were recorded as 5–0 forfeits for the opposing team. [2] Luxembourg won the tournament, defeating Bulgaria 10–4 in the final, and played in Division IIB in 2018. [3] Chinese Taipei debuted in Division III and, apart from defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina in a forfeit, recorded their first official win, beating the UAE 4–0 in the 5th place playoff. [4]

The Bulgarian bid was the only contender for the 2017 IIHF World Championship Division III competition. [1] It will mark the first time that this competition has been held in Bulgaria. In September 2016 the format of the division was realigned into one tournament with two preliminary divisions.

The 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was the 42nd edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship, and was hosted by the city of Buffalo, New York at the KeyBank Center and HarborCenter. It opened on December 26, 2017 and closed with the gold medal game on January 5, 2018. It was the sixth time that the United States has hosted the WJIHC, and the second time that Buffalo has done so, previously hosting in 2011.
The 2016 IIHF World Championship Division III was an international ice hockey tournament run by the International Ice Hockey Federation. It was contested in Istanbul, Turkey, from 31 March to 6 April 2016. The host team, Turkey, won all of its games and was promoted to Division II B for 2017.
The 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship Division II was three international ice hockey tournaments organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Division II Group A tournament was played in Bled, Slovenia, from 2 to 8 April 2016, the Division II Group B tournament was played in Jaca, Spain, from 29 February to 6 March 2016, and the Division II Group B Qualification tournament was played in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 7 to 10 December 2015.

The 2018 IIHF U18 World Championship was the 20th IIHF World U18 Championship. The tournament was played from 19 to 29 April 2018 in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk, Russia. United States lost to Finland.
The 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship Division I were a pair of international under-18 ice hockey tournaments organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Division I A and Division I B tournaments represented the second and the third tier of the IIHF World U18 Championship. For the 2017 schedule both tournaments took place at the Bled Ice Hall in Slovenia.
The 2018 IIHF Women's U18 World Championship was the 11th Women's U18 World Championship in ice hockey. It was played at the Ice Palace in Dmitrov, Russia from 6 to 13 January 2018. The USA won for the seventh time, for the first time defeating someone other than Canada in the gold medal game. Sweden took silver, while Canada took bronze beating host Russia. The Russians beat Canada in the preliminary round, marking another first.

The Division II Group A tournament was played in Maribor, Slovenia, from 31 March to 6 April 2018, the Division II Group B tournament was played in Valdemoro, Spain, from 17 to 23 March 2018, and the Division II Group B Qualification tournament was played in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 4 to 9 December 2017.
The 2018 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship Division III was played with one group of six teams, as well as a three team qualification tournament for the 2019 tournament. Israel won all their games and were promoted to Division II B. The team which placed first in the qualification tournament was expected to be promoted to Division III, swapping places with the sixth place team in Division III, but the 2019 organizers chose to make Division III a single tournament making these placings irrelevant.

For each tier, the team which placed first was promoted to the next highest division, while the team which placed last was relegated to a lower division.
