The 2019 World Modern Pentathlon Championships were held in Budapest, Hungary from 2 to 9 September 2019. [1]
The 59th edition of the championships, and the 23rd in which the men's and women's events have been combined, the individual competitions also operate as a direct qualification event for the Modern pentathlon at the 2020 Summer Olympics, with three quota places available in each event [2]

* Joseph Chung and Kate French, both Great Britain, achieved a top three finishing position to qualify for Tokyo 2020. In both cases, however, the athlete had already previously qualified, and so their quota is vacated, and added to the quotas to be awarded on world ranking points at the end of the qualification period. The 2008 World Modern Pentathlon Championships were held in Budapest, Hungary from May 29 to June 3. It was the last Olympic qualification event in modern pentathlon before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Max Esposito is an Australian modern pentathlete. He competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's event. He was the youngest athlete in the race and finished seventh. Esposito has also competed in one Youth Olympic Games and one World Modern Pentathlon Championships.

She came second at the opening event of the 2021 Modern Pentathlon World Cup. Muir competed in the modern pentathlon event at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics.
