The 2020 FC Astana season is the twelfth successive season that Astana will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. Astana are defending Kazakhstan Premier League holders, having won their sixth title the previous season. Astana will also play in the season opening Super Cup against FC Kaisar, the Kazakhstan Cup and enter the Champions League at the First qualifying round.

Contents

Season events

On 13 January, Roman Hryhorchuk left Astana by mutual consent. [1] The following day, 14 January, Michal Bílek was announced as the new Head Coach of Astana. [2] On 24 January, Astana announced the signing of Max Ebong on a four-year contract from Shakhtyor Soligorsk, [3] and Tigran Barseghyan to a two your contract from Kaisar. [4]

On 17 February, Rangelo Janga moved to Lugano on loan until 30 June. [5]

On 20 February, Astana announced the signing of Pieros Sotiriou to a three-year contract from Copenhagen. [6]

Due to on going repair work at the Astana Arena, Astana started the season by playing their home games at the Zhas Kyran Stadium in Almaty. [7]

On 13 March, the Football Federation of Kazakhstan announced all league fixtures would be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [8] On 16 March the Football Federation of Kazakhstan suspended all football until 15 April. [9]

On 30 May, the Professional Football League of Kazakhstan announced that Irtysh Pavlodar had withdrawn from the league due to financial issues, with all their matches being excluded from the league results. [10]

On 26 June, it was announced that the 2020 Kazakhstan Premier League would resume on 1 July. [11]

On 2 July, Serhiy Malyi left Astana after his contract expired. [12]

On 3 July, the Kazakhstan Premier League was suspended for two-weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [13]

On 23 July, Sultan Sagnayev and Ramazan Karimov had their season-long loan deals with Caspiy ended prematurely and they returned to the club. [14]

On 7 August, Sparta Prague announced that defender Uroš Radaković had joined Astana on loan for the remainder of the 2020 season, with Astana holding an option to make the transfer permanent. [15] On 8 August, Astana confirmed the arrival of Radaković. [16]

On 22 August, Rangelo Janga was loaned to NEC Nijmegen for one-year. [17]

On 26 August, Michal Bílek was sacked as manager, with Executive Director Paul Ashworth being placed in temporary charge. [18] Ashworth his role as caretaker manager and executive director by mutual consent on 7 October. [19] On 16 October, former captain Andrey Tikhonov was appointed as the clubs new manager. [20]

In the summer Astana will enter the Champions League, at the Second Qualifying Stage, and the Kazakhstan Cup.

The 2019 FC Astana season was the eleventh successive season that Astana played in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. Astana defended their Kazakhstan Premier League title, having won their fifth title the previous season. Domestically, Astana defeated FC Kairat in the season-opening Super Cup and reached the Last 16 of the Kazakhstan Cup. In Europe, Astana entered the Champions League at the first qualifying round and were defeated by CFR Cluj, dropping into the Europa League where they reached the Group Stage.

The 2020 FC Caspiy season is Caspiy's the first season back in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan, since 2001. Caspiy will also take part in the Kazakhstan Cup.

The 2020 FC Kaisar season was the club's fourth season back in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan, and 23rd in total. As well as participating in the Kazakhstan Premier League, Kaisar will defend their title in the Kazakhstan Cup. On 29 February they began their season losing 1–0 to Astana in the Kazakhstan Super Cup.

The 2021 FC Astana season was the thirteenth successive season that Astana played in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. The finished the season 2nd, behind Tobol, reached the Semifinals of the Kazakhstan Cup and were knocked out of the Europa Conference League by KuPS at the Third Qualifying Round stage.

The 2022 FC Astana season was the fourteenth successive season that FC Astana will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan. They finished as Champions of the Premier League, having finished second the previous season behind Tobol. Astana also reached the Semifinals of the Kazakhstan Cup where they were knocked out by Ordabasy, and the Second Qualifying round of the Europa Conference League where they were defeated by Raków Częstochowa.

The 2023 FC Astana season was the fifteenth successive season that FC Astana will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan.

The 2024 FC Astana season is the sixteenth successive season that FC Astana will play in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest tier of association football in Kazakhstan.
