The 2020 Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons baseball team was a baseball team that represented Purdue University Fort Wayne in the 2020 NCAA Division I baseball season. The Mastodons were members of the Summit League and played their home games at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were led by first-year head coach Doug Schreiber.

The season was cut short in stages by March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2]

Previous season

The Mastodons finished the 2019 NCAA Division I baseball season 7–45 overall (2–28 conference) and sixth place in conference standings. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Mastodons failed to qualify to play in the 2019 NCAA tournament.

Preseason

On July 3, 2019, Bobby Pierce stepped down as the head coach at Purdue Fort Wayne. [3] On July 23, 2019, former Purdue University head coach, Doug Schreiber was named the Mastodons new head coach. [4] On August 28, 2019, Schreiber named Lafayette Aviators manager, Brent McNeil, the team's pitching coach. [5] On October 3, 2019, Schreiber finalized his staff with the hiring of Ken Jones and Gordon Cardenas. [6]

Doug Schreiber is an American baseball coach and former second baseman. He is the current head baseball coach of the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons. Schreiber played college baseball at Purdue University. He was the head baseball coach at Purdue University from 1999 to 2016, where he posted a 485–489 record. From 2004 to 2006, Purdue qualified for three consecutive Big Ten baseball tournaments. His 2006 team went 31–27, and defeated #2 North Carolina. In 2001, Purdue finished second in the Big Ten Conference, for its best finish in over 30 years. The 2001 team upset #1 ranked Rice to start the season.

The Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, formerly known as the IPFW Mastodons and Fort Wayne Mastodons, are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW). The school's athletic program includes 16 varsity sports teams. Their mascot is a Mastodon named Don, and the school colors are black and gold. The university participates in the NCAA's Division I as members of the Horizon League in all varsity sports except for men's volleyball, which competes in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. Robert Fitzroy Pierce is an American baseball coach and former player. He most recently served as head coach of the Purdue University Fort Wayne from the 2009 season to 2019. He played at UNLV, Central Arizona, and New Mexico State. With Central Arizona, he played in the 1999 JUCO World Series. He began his coaching career as an assistant with Central Arizona for one season before becoming an assistant at Arkansas–Little Rock. Two seasons later, he became head coach at NCAA Division II Metro State before accepting the same job at IPFW. On July 3, 2019, Pierce stepped down as the head coach at Purdue Fort Wayne.
