The 75th All-Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held on 3 occasions. The individual all-around took place from 15-18 April, followed by the apparatus finals on 5-6 June, and finally the team all-around from 11-12 December.

Contents

Takasaki hosted all the individual events, both all-around and apparatus, while the team competition was held in Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Shibuya, Tokyo. The tournaments also served as the national trials for the 2020 Summer Olympics, with the participation of over 170 gymnasts nationwide. [1] [2] [3]

Qualification

Men's Events

Individual All-around

The maximum of 90 male gymnasts would be qualified to compete for the men's individual all-around event, following these criterion: [4]

  • 2020 All Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships top ranks: 44 gymnasts.
  • National Tryout (tournament 3): 18 gymnasts.
  • Men's Junior Strengthening Department recommendation: 5 gymnasts.
  • Japan Gymnastics Association recommendation: 5 gymnasts.
  • 2021 Summer Universiade shortlist: 18 gymnasts.
    • 53rd All Japan Senior Gymnastics Championships top team: 6 slots.
    • Gakuren recommendation: 12 gymnasts.

Individual Apparatus

The maximum of 24 male gymnasts would be qualified to compete for the men's individual all-around event, following these criteria: [5]

① Winner of 2020 event and the gymnast selected to represent Japan at the World Cup in Doha; or top 2 of 2020 event.

② Top 22-24 gymnasts (not included in ①) all-around qualifying and tryout results to make the maximum of 24.

③ 2 spot for team contribution based on the results up to the NHK Trophy among the players who met the B-selection conditions (NHK Trophy 10th place or less, best team member, world ranking 1st-place winner). This 2 gymnast who didn't passed the All-Japan event-specific qualifying were allowed to perform (but wouldn't advance to the final)

• Selected athletes for ③ were allowed perform, but the results wouldn't be in the eventual ranking.

• The selection of qualification ③ was announced after the end of the NHK Trophy.

Team All-around

16 male gymnastics clubs qualified for the team final following these criteria: [6]

  • 12 teams with the highest scores at the competitions below:
    • 75th All Japan Student Championships (1st division)
    • 75th All Japan Student Championships (2nd division)
    • 54th All Japan Senior Gymnastics Championships (1st division)
  • Top 2 teams of the 2021 All-Japan Junior Championships.
  • 1 team with the highest score at the 2021 National High School Championships that hadn't qualified yet.
  • 1 Junior National Selection team.

Mai Murakami is a Japanese retired artistic gymnast and Olympic medalist. She is the 2017 and 2021 World champion on floor exercise, the 2018 World all-around silver medalist and floor exercise bronze medalist, the 2021 World balance beam bronze medalist, and a four-time Japanese national all-around champion. She represented Japan at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, winning a bronze medal on floor exercise in the latter. This made her the first female Japanese gymnast to win an individual medal at the Olympics.

Miyakawa Sae is a Japanese artistic gymnast. She represented Japan at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics and won a bronze medal on the vault. She also competed at the 2015 World Championships where she finished fourth on the floor exercise and at the 2017 World Championships where she finished eighth on the vault. She was a member of the team that won a gold medal at the 2015 Asian Championships, and individually, she won the silver medal on the vault and the bronze medal on the floor exercise. She also represented Japan at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The men's artistic individual all-around competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 6 and 10 August 2016 at the HSBC Arena. Kōhei Uchimura won gold, becoming the first male gymnast in 44 years to do this in two successive Olympic Games. Uchimura also became the second man to earn three all-around medals, matching countryman Sawao Kato with two golds and one silver. Uchimura's victory was Japan's sixth in the men's all-around, tying the Soviet Union for most all-time. His margin of victory was only 0.099, which was less than one small step on landing in terms of gymnastic scoring. It was also his eighth consecutive victory at the top competition of the year. Oleg Verniaiev's silver was Ukraine's first medal in the event since 2000. Max Whitlock's bronze was Great Britain's first since the 1908 Games in London.

The men's horizontal bar competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held at the HSBC Arena on 6 and 16 August. There were 71 competitors from 34 nations. The event was won by Fabian Hambüchen of Germany, the nation's first victory in the horizontal bar since 1996 and third overall. Danell Leyva won the United States' third silver medal in four Games in the event; Nile Wilson's bronze was Great Britain's first-ever medal in the horizontal bar.

Aiko Sugihara is a Japanese female artistic gymnast. She was the 2015 Asian team and all-around champion and uneven bars and floor exercise silver medalist. She was also the 2019 Summer Universiade champion with the team and silver medalist on the floor exercise. She represented Japan at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Daiki Hashimoto is a Japanese artistic gymnast. Widely regarded as the successor of Kohei Uchimura, he won two gold medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in all-around and horizontal bar, as well as a silver in team. At the World Championships, he also achieved 1 gold, 5 silvers and 1 bronze.
