The 2021 Marshall Thundering Herd football team represented Marshall University during the 2021 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Thundering Herd played their home games at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia, and competed in the East Division of Conference USA (CUSA). The team was coached by first-year head coach Charles Huff.
On October 30, 2021, Marshall announced they would become a member of the Sun Belt Conference. [1] On March 29, it was announced they would officially join on July 1, 2022, making this the final season competing in C-USA. [2]
Marshall announced its 2021 football schedule on January 27, 2021. [3] [4] The 2021 schedule consists of 6 home and 6 away games in the regular season.

The 2019 VMI Keydets football team represented the Virginia Military Institute in the 2019 NCAA Division I FCS football season. It was VMI's 129th football season. The Keydets were led by fifth-year head coach Scott Wachenheim. They played their home games at 10,000–seat Alumni Memorial Field at Foster Stadium. They were a member of the Southern Conference (SoCon). They finished the season 5–7, 4–4 in SoCon play to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. Their 5 wins were the most achieved in a single season since finishing 6–6 in 2003.

The 2020 Eastern Kentucky Colonels football team represented Eastern Kentucky University during the 2020–21 NCAA Division I FCS football season. They were led by Walt Wells in his first season as the program's 15th head coach. The Colonels played their home games at Roy Kidd Stadium and competed as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.
The 2021 Florida Gators football team represented the University of Florida in the 2021 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Gators played their home games at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, and competed in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). They were led by fourth-year head coach Dan Mullen, who was fired on November 21, and were then led by interim head coach Greg Knox.
The 2021 Miami Hurricanes football team represented the University of Miami during the 2021 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Hurricanes were led by third-year head coach Manny Diaz, who was dismissed on December 6. They played their home games at Hard Rock Stadium, competing as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The 2021 North Carolina Central Eagles football team represented North Carolina Central University as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) during the 2021 NCAA Division I FCS football season. Led by second-year head coach Trei Oliver, the Eagles compiled an overall record of 6–5 with a mark of 4–1, placing second in the MEAC. North Carolina Central played home games at O'Kelly–Riddick Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.

The Chanticleers compiled an overall record of 9–4 with a mark of 6–2 in conference play, sharing the Sun Belt East Division title with James Madison. Coastal Carolina advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Football Championship Game, losing to Troy. The Chanticleers were invited to the Birmingham Bowl, where they lost to East Carolina. Fifth-year head coach Jamey Chadwell led the team through the regular season and the conference championship game before resigning the become the head football coach at Liberty University. Chad Staggs served as interim head coach for the team's bowl game. Coastal Carolina played home games at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
The 2022 Marshall Thundering Herd football team represented Marshall University during the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Thundering Herd played their home games at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia, and competed in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference. The team was coached by second-year head coach Charles Huff.
