The 2022 Pacific Mini Games was held in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. [2] [3] It was the eleventh edition of the Pacific Mini Games and the first to be hosted by the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands. [4] This event was originally going to be held in 2021, but was postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Host selection

The Northern Mariana Islands were awarded the rights to host the games on July 4, 2014 during the Pacific Games Councils General Assembly meeting in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. [5] The decision was unanimous after the CNMI were the only bidder after the deadline. [6]

Sports

An initial twelve sports were scheduled for the games but this was reduced to six in 2019, following the impact of Typhoon Yutu. [8] The program was later increased to nine sports with the inclusion of va'a (outrigger canoeing), tennis and weightlifting in 2021. [9]

The Micronesian Games are a quadrennial international multi-sport event within the Micronesian region. The Games were first held in 1969 in Saipan. The 2010 Micronesian Games were initially due to be held in Majuro, until the hosts withdrew. The 2010 Games were hosted by Palau. The Federated States of Micronesia won the bidding to host the 2014 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei State, and later won again against CNMI for the 2018 Micronesian Games to be held in Yap State.

The 2011 Pacific Games took place in Nouméa, New Caledonia, from August 27 to September 10, 2011. Nouméa was the 14th host of the Pacific Games. Upon closure of the registration for entries, "some 4,300 athletes" had registered from the twenty-two competing nations, although it was expected that not all would attend.

The 2023 Pacific Games, officially known as the XVII Pacific Games, will be a continental multi-sport event for Oceania countries and territories that is scheduled to be held in Honiara, Solomon Islands between 19 November and 2 December 2023. Weightlifting is one of the sports contested at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games, to be held in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. The competition is scheduled to take place between 20 and 23 June 2022, spread across twenty weight classes.

The tennis competition at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games took place from 16 to 24 June 2022 at the American Memorial Park and Pacific Islands Club in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. Tennis along with only one other sport commenced a day before the official opening ceremony of the games.

The outrigger canoeing, mostly referred to as Va'a in the Pacific region, competition at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games will be held from 20–24 June 2022 at the 13th Fishermen Memorial Monument Beach in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands.

Baseball made its second Pacific Mini Games appearance at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games on June 16-24 at the Oleai Sports Complex - Francisco “Tan Ko” M. Palacios Baseball Field in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. The Northern Mariana Islands team won the gold medal, defeating Guam by 12–9 in the final.

The beach volleyball competition at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games will be held from 20 to 24 June 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Resort Beach in Saipan, and Tachogna Beach in Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands.

The team competition for Tennis at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games took place at the American Memorial Park and Pacific Islands Club in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands from 16 to 18 June 2022.

The Northern Mariana Islands national badminton team represents Northern Mariana Islands, an unincorporated territory and commonwealth of the United States, in international badminton team competitions. The Northern Mariana Islands national team is controlled by the Northern Marianas Badminton Association in Saipan.
