The athletics competition at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games was held between 21 and 25 June 2022 at the Oleai Sports Complex in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. [1] Seven para-events were also staged at these games, (four for men and three for women).
As of 1 June 2022, eighteen countries and territories have confirmed their participation in the athletics program for the games. [1]

The VI South Pacific Mini Games were held from 3 to 14 December 2001 on Norfolk Island.
Athletics competitions have been held at every Pacific Games since the inaugural edition 1963 in Suva, Fiji and at every Pacific Mini Games since the inaugural edition 1981 in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Both events are open for the 22 member federations of the Pacific Games Council. The Pacific Games started as South Pacific Games and were renamed in 2011, whereas the Pacific Mini Games started as South Pacific Mini Games and were renamed in 2009.

Athletics competitions at the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games were held at the National Stadium in Koror, Palau, between July 25–29, 2005.
The 2013 Pacific Mini Games was the ninth edition of these Mini Games. They were held in Mata Utu in Wallis and Futuna from 2 to 12 September 2013. It was the first time the games had been held in Wallis and Futuna.
The 1981 South Pacific Mini Games were held at Honiara in the Solomon Islands from 8–16 July 1981. It was the first edition of the South Pacific Mini Games.
The 1997 South Pacific Mini Games were held at Pago Pago in American Samoa from 11 to 22 August 1997. It was the fifth edition of the South Pacific Mini Games. It was much larger than previous editions, with an almost doubling of the number of medals awarded compared to the 1993 South Pacific Mini Games. The impressive performances by Nauru in weightlifting continued in Pago Pago, with the tiny nation finishing on top of the unofficial medal table after winning 33 gold.
The 2017 Pacific Mini Games were held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in December 2017. It was the tenth edition of the Pacific Mini Games, and the second to be hosted in Vanuatu.
The 2022 Pacific Mini Games was held in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. It was the eleventh edition of the Pacific Mini Games and the first to be hosted by the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands. This event was originally going to be held in 2021, but was postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first time in the history of the Pacific Mini Games, the sport of badminton made its debut at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. It was held at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium from the 20-25 June 2022.
Baseball made its second Pacific Mini Games appearance at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games on June 16-24 at the Oleai Sports Complex - Francisco “Tan Ko” M. Palacios Baseball Field in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. The Northern Mariana Islands team won the gold medal, defeating Guam by 12–9 in the final.
The beach volleyball competition at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games will be held from 20 to 24 June 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Resort Beach in Saipan, and Tachogna Beach in Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands.
